Jag IFS/IRS for an Advance Design truck
I think I just bought an '85 Jag XJS. If everyone fulfills on the email dialog I expect to use the front and rear suspension on my '55 1st GMC Suburban.
Based on what I've read on the web and seen various places I've long felt this was one of the more interesting options. But tonight I cannot find a single thread here or elsewhere that describes the project or exactly which Jag to buy. I clearly remember a thread on the HAMB where a guy documented how he did it. Tonight even though I know his username I can't find him or the thread. The price is good enough I decided to take the leap and give it a try. My question is does anyone remember the location of any information on this swap? I've searched for the past hour and have not found anything of substance. I had to make the decision fast enough I don't even know the track width front and rear of an '85 XJS. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Steve this is awesome news. I stopped looking at Jags on CL. There just too
many too cheap. I have heard that all the XJS (coupes) have posi rear.

I've read conflicting reports on that. It could also have 2.73 gears.

Sorry to see mike at cwi having problems.
Below are some links you might find useful. popbrowns and wisbech are companies who can supply parts if you decage the rear both are in the uk but give you a idea of what is available. I have seen quite a few advance design with jag fronts fit ok. Most I have seen have had the front crossmember welded in. I am putting one in my task force and am thinking of using the body mounts like holmsey did (link to his build on ford at bottom). I am using series 3 xj6 axles . I've used a Jag IFS on my 54, what with them being nice and plentiful over here....wish I could say the same for the LHD Jag racks...heres a couple of pics of my install.....the only problem I had was If you are using the Jag Rack and a SBC, we had problems with header clearance between the rails and the shaft of the rack....so we went outside the rails!!!

I only want one. Can't afford more than that. I'll have to wait until after vacation and after I can get in a few hours of overtime. I spotted a 79 on CL today but am not sure if that is in the correct year ballpark.

Ok, be slow...but be slow WITH PICTURES!
I'm the guy that has the Jag IRS but I didn't put it in so I have as many questions as you have. My IFS is from some unknown American car but whoever did it just put the car's cross memeber under the '46's frame and welded it in with gussett plates. I think the track is too wide as it rubs fairly narrow tires on an turn/bump combo but of course that could be due to the fact that the installer didn't put ANY upper shock mounts in!!! So I have to make a deicsion about putting them in, using an MII system OR possibly using Jag IFS to match my Jag IRS. I suspect the track width could be a limiting factor though as my AD (Art Deco) truck is narrower I think than your AD (Advanced Design) truck. Anyone know for sure? |

Forgive me for resurrecting this old thread. I'm going to attempt the installation of an 85 suspension from an XJ6 (both front and rear) into a 57 chevy pickup. Anyone else pulled this off yet?

Oh...and one bit of advice for doing this in a TF truck...cut an inch or two from the bottom of the frame rail so that the upper control arms end up OVER the rails. This will also allow you to get the front a couple inches lower. I did not do this on mine and had to grind a lot of the top rails where the control arm pivots were going to interfere.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you give me any more insight on what you did on your front? It looks like you welded that badboy in. Any more pics or description of what is involved would be appreciated. I'm probably going to have to outsource the welding. I'm currently in the process of ripping the motor out of the jaguar to be able to steal the suspension and rear end from it. For the rear I'm thinking of either going with a snow-white setup or maybe just keep the cage and pinch the frame in a bit to accommodate the stock jag cage. I'm going to be running a big block. =) EDIT--->Is soft mounting (drilling and bolting through frame) an option on the 57? it would save me from having to outsource the welding.
