what makes the hood pop up in the back?

My hood is still to high in the back by the cowl and I have done all I can do. If you place your hand on it it goes down the 1/4 inch ut needs but will not stay. Are my hindges wore out or might new springs help?

I'm sure you lubed the joints, but sometimes the hinge will be in a bit of a bind, or even bent.

Re: what makes the hood pop up in the back?

I have had this same problem and have been told that the hinges are just gone. All the joints are shot and it is rubbing metal to metal. I lubed mine for days, cleaned all the rust off, did everything except take them apart and rebuild. I am planning on getting the kind that hide in the firewall.

Re: what makes the hood pop up in the back?

I was hoping that I had missed that little magic trick to fix it but I kinda figured the the bushings were all gone. Thanks for the answers.

Re: what makes the hood pop up in the back?

Try this trick: Loosen the bolts that hold the hinges in the back (hood up of course) Then try to "lift" the hood so that it opens further. This will push the hinges down a little in back. Then re-tighten and close the hood. This should correct the problem. I have done this on several 67-72 trucks and it should also work on any vehicle. Good luck.

I agree. Where the hinges bolt to the inner fenders, needs to drop down in the back. You might need to slide the hood forward on the hinges also.

I have the same problem on my dad's '71 and I have tried just about every trick to get it to sit down but it just wont. I'm gonna have to find some other hinges

Re: what makes the hood pop up in the back?

I think maybe your seal may be holding it up. A buddy had a cheapo seal on his GMC, and it stood proud. Once he got a quality v-shaped seal it laid right down. I think Steele makes them. First try removing your seal to see if that helps.

Here are the factory hood alignment instructions from the 1960 Shop Manual. Also make sure the adjustable bumpers shown in figure 74 are low enough to not interfere with full closure:

Re: what makes the hood pop up in the back?

As a last resort I have elongated the mounting holes in the hinge that bolt to the firewall allowing it to be mounted 1/4" lower. Probably not the correct way to do it but it's cheap and fairly easy.

Yes it helped. Now this was on my '59 Bel air but I see no reason it should not work on these trucks too.

Re: what makes the hood pop up in the back?

I also had the seal issue, trimmed it some and it layed right down. amazing now that little piece of rubber caused such an issue, we scratched our heads for a couple hours during assembly. You could try taping it down to test, but ours was too stiff for that.
