58-59 hoods
Does anyone else here have a problem with their hoods popping up next to the cab when you close the hood? If so what is the fix? has anyone made up a front hinge for their hood? Want to get this fixed & welded ( if necessary ) before it goes to body shop.
Thanks, |

Re: 58-59 hoods
Mine does the same thing. The springs are really weak and won't keep the hood up anymore (I made the mistake of oiling them) Mine sits high on the drivers side. I going to pick up some new hinges and springs.

Re: 58-59 hoods
I did a foward tilt. I tried everything else I could think of. I even took mine apart and made brass bushings and nylon shims and new springs. It still sat high.

Re: 58-59 hoods
Which brand of forward tilt mechanism did you use? Most of them are advertised for 55 to 57 only. Did you modify one of those?

Re: 58-59 hoods
I've wondered about trying to adapt a 55-57 kit on mine.

Re: 58-59 hoods
I had that problem with my 58. I got new hinges that came with new springs. The springs were too strong & pulled it up. I put the old springs on & it helped alot. I then replaced the cowl to hood weatherstrip with a universal that wasn't as thick. That left me close but one side was still high so I pulled the hinge & elongated the mounting holes so it would adjust down further. That solved the problem.

Re: 58-59 hoods
I do not know how adjustable the hinges are on a 58-59, but I have been able to adjust them on 67-72 trucks to get the back of the hood down even with the cab, doing the following: Pop the hood open, loosen the bolts that hold the hinge on the rear, then push the hood up as if you are trying to open it further. This will push the hinges down in the back. Retighten and close the hood. That should bring the back down even.

Re: 58-59 hoods
Mine will sit low enough to be even, but I have to push the back of the hood down the last 3/4 inch on the passenger side. I had the same problem on my 79 TA and never figured it out. I thought it might be a shim thing but several hours of fooling with it didn't help. Body alignment is the pits.
