intro and questions

Hi, I have been on the board for a while but very seldom post and mostly posted in the 50's section.

I am picking up a 63 short bed chevy truck on sunday and it currently has the single fruit jar master cylinder. It has disc up front and drum in the rear.

The rear is the six lug setup. What are my options to convert to 5 lug? Is it a 10 bolt that come in these trucks?

If so, I have disc brakes for a later camaro ten bolt. Could I just buy new axles and put on the disc brake setup all around?

Second. If I stay disc/drum and want to go up to a booster and dual master cylinder is there a part store direct replacement that I can buy? maybe a 72 truck setup?

once i get the truck i will post some pictures.

Welcome Lotus - congrats on the forthcoming addition! Can't wait to see some pics of it when you get it.

Only comment I have is regarding the current owner's single master cylinder with a disk/drum brake set-up. It sounds as if someone started and didn't finish a project - might be a good idea to get a dual master cylinder on there so that you can properly proportion the braking setup you're going to inherit (if you pan on driving it right away before you get to the dual/power set-up, etc).

I'm sure others will chime in on the rear end and/or 6-5 lug conversion options. Here is a link to a place where you can at least browse a whole bunch of options (CPP) even if you don't end up buying anything from them. It's fairly expensive high end stuff (from my wallet's perspective) but it's a huge selection of options on different gear and the link is all for 60-72 chev, specifically. Can at least help give you an idea of what's out there to even look for. I use it as a good place to start and then you can compare from there as you expand your search. Some other folks can help build the picture for your options from an OEM gear perspective much better than I can.

yeah i plan on putting on a dual master cylinder asap...
do you know if there is a oem one that is a direct replacement?

lotus good to see more hambers on here. post picks of the truck when you get it. as far as disks on the rear and master cylender questions for sure capt fab is the way to go. for a five lug drum rear find a 71-72 chevy half ton the have five lug and are a bolt in.and a 67-86 front crossmember is a bolt in deal for disks on the front.

Your rear should be a 12 bolt if it is stock. Aftermarket 5 lug shafts are available but on a 63-64 you would need to replace the side gears in order to install them. A 71-72 rear is 5 lug and will bolt to your trailing arms, but the panhard bar mount is in a different location and would have to be adapted. Also, the 71-72 rear is about 1-1/2" wider than the 63.

It might be easiest/cheapest to have your stock shafts redrilled. If you want to use the Camaro brakes, this would be your best choice anyway, because all the 5 lug truck shafts are 5 on 5" and the Camaro is 4-3/4". Before you commit, you might want to find out if Captainfab or any of the other vendors sell brackets for this swap.

I ended up with a disc brake rear end out of a 91 camaro for free.

The truck i am getting on sunday has disc in the front 5x 4 3/4 and 6 lug drum in the rear. I am pretty sure the rear is stock.

I need to get it down to 5x 4 3/4 in the rear. I really don't care if it is drum or disc but figured since I have the 91 camaro with disc i would try and use it if I can.

If you don't mind some welding, why not just swap the whole Camaro rear? It would certainly be easier and cheaper than trying to cobble the Camaro brakes onto the truck axle housing.

One option for you would be to have your stock axles filled and drilled to the 5 x 4 3/4" pattern. Then you could use my Impala SS rear disc brackets or the Camaro caliper brackets with the Camaro rotors instead of the Impala SS rotors. I'm pretty sure that would work....I'd have to verify the size of the Camaro rotors.

Don't forget that the truck 12 bolt is different than the car 12 bolt. The pinion shaft is smaller and there are some other subtle differences that make this diff a "special piece".--jeff
