96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
I just picked up a rear axle with disc brakes out af an older caprice. Anybody know how the width will match up. Already did my 5 lug conversion on the fron end to a mid 80's chevy truck. Thanks

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
Does the cop car have a ten bolt like the SS impala? Regular Caprices have eight bolts, i was told they wont work.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
Everything is 10 bolt on caprices. The difference is the 4.3L cars generally had 7.5" rears and the 5.7L cars had 8.5" And unfortunately Cop Car does not guarantee 5.7L, many were ordered with the 4.3L for fuel economy. Cop Rears are wider than Impalas. I can't remember the actual dimensions off the top of my head though.
I've got the 8.5" with 4.10's and an Eaton Posi in my Impala and it seems to take whatever punishment I can throw at it. -Brian

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
I don't know just how wide they are, but it seems that someone here has done that swap, I just don't know who.
Since you have it there, I would just throw a tape on it and measure it. Your original truck rear end measures 62" WMS to WMS. That will give you a measurement to compare to.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
here is a complete lineup of these rear-ends. i've had good luck with the stock rear in my wagon and it pulls 1.69 sixty foots at 4700+lbs
Chevy 91-92 sedan 1566mm - narrow (all) 93-96 sedan 1566mm - narrow (9C1 - disc & drum & some other drum applications) 1598mm - wide (Impala SS - disc & B4U - drum) Buick 91-96 & Fleetwood 93-96 sedans 1566mm - narrow (all) NOTE: Fleetwood housing is unique to the application - 4-channel ABS provisions 91-96 wagon, all 1642.5mm All 93-96 7.625" (ring gear) housings are 1598mm wide (Chevy sedan only) Sedan housings, in both widths, have the same lower control arm bracket location/spread distance, and will fit any other sedan frame. Wagons have a wider spread distance (approx. 2") between lower control arm brackets on housing, and corresponding wider frame lower control arm mounts. |

Soi have found anyway. 93-96 sedan 1566mm - narrow (9C1 - disc & drum & some other drum applications) 1598mm - wide (Impala SS - disc & B4U - drum)

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
My buddy put a 94 caprice cop car rear in his.. Here is the thread:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=358328 Fit's perfect. The only problem he has been having is trying to find the shoes for the emergency brake. I guess they are not available anymore. They look like small version of normal brake shoes.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
is there any draw back to a 4 link set up as opposed to the factory set up? my intention is to bag it and get it as low as possible.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
A triangulated 4 link will eliminate the side to side travel of the axle caused by the panhard bar.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
I just found a '94 Impala SS rear locally and am thinking of getting it for mine.
Captainfab, can the Camaro calipers be used in place of the Impala's? Don't the Camaro's use a built in e-brake in stead of the crazy mini-drum thing? I have to have an e-brake, but if the price is right, I wanted to see if swapping calipers would be an option.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
The Camaro caliper mounting brackets (Factory part) that the actual caliper mounts in is different than with the Impala SS calipers. I can check tomorrow and see if the calipers themselves will interchange in the factory brackets.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
Sorry to say that the '93-'97 Camaro rear calipers will not fit onto the '94-'96 Impala factory caliper brackets (cages).

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
I'm not finding a whole lot of info on this swap.
So with the Impala SS rear, do I need to do anything with the driveline or yoke? Are the axle tubes the same size as the C10? So I just need to weld on the perches and bolt it in?

Since chopper john put one under his truck, you might send him a PM and see what he has to say.

I did, but hadn't heard back from him yet. Sounds pretty basic, not unlike most everything else on these rigs.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes
I haven't installed one of these differentials, but it shouldn't be any different than any other differential swap.
You'll have to remove all unnecessary factory brackets from the new differential. Then you will need to weld trailing arm mounts to the new differential in the correct position. This includes the side to side angle for the trailing arms as well as the corrrect pinion angle. Then you will have to fabricate or install a kit to mount the panhard bar on the new differential. The it's just a matter of hooking up the e-brake cables and brake lines.
