wiring diagram help

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for starting/ignition system for a 65 with 320 6 cyl? My truck died the other day and after walking home and getting a ride back to get it about 3 hours later it fired right up, of course. I went to start it yesterday and nothing, fuel no fire. I only had 4-5 volts at the coil and shouldn't there be 12v with key on? I hooked a jumper wire from the battery to the pos side of the coil and it started with no problem. I need to see where the feed comes from (I think the starter solinoid but not 100 % sure)

Re: wiring diagram help

There's a resistor wire that comes up from the starter that should reduce the voltage down to 9 volts at the coil, if I remember correctly. I had that wire split on me at one time also corroded connector at the starter. Try not to cut the wire any shorter because that will change the voltage.

Re: wiring diagram help

The wire from the solenoid to the coil (usually yellow, but other colors are possible) is just ordinary wire. This one bypasses the resistance wire in the harness, but only when the starter is cranking the engine. The actual resistance wire runs from the firewall connector to the junction pont with the yellow wire, which is normally either at the solenoid (R) terminal or the coil (+) terminal.

4-5 volts at the coil (and this is measured with the points closed - you will see 12 volts with the points open) does seem a bit low, but it still shouldn't keep the engine from starting. Remember, the coil SHOULD get almost a full 12 volts when the starter is in operation. You might want to check the voltage at the coil while a helper cranks the engine, just to be sure.

Re: wiring diagram help

I changed my search title a little (like google one word or an arrangement of words make all the difference) a little and found a wiring diagram. I'm going to keep the volt meter in the truck with a couple jumper wires and a few assorted tools to see if it will happen again. Like always, hard to find a problem when it is not acting up.

This should be the diagram you were asking for:
