Carb'ed 5.3L build
I want to share my 5.3L build. I started with a 60K miles 5.3L, it had the intake but no accessories other than the water pump. It will be going in a '50 chevy truck and I want an old school look, for that reason I chose to do an efi to carb swap. It will also be backed by an NP833 o/d 4-speed. Here is a complete parts list to date:
MSD 6010 Edelbrock Victor Jr. LS1 Comp XR265 212/218, .522/.529 on 114 cam LS6 valvesprings TSP 7.400 pushrods Hooker LS1 ceramic coated headers Barry Grant Speed Demon 650vs PML Covers LS1 finned valve covers f-body oil pan, pickup f-body dipstick f-body crank pully f-body alternator, ps pump and brackets universal LSx engine mounts (weld-in) LS2 pilot bearing 4.8L/6.0L flywheel 80's truck 12" clutch kit new crank bolt new flywheel bolts speedway motors sending unit adapters (metric to npt) That's all I can think of and there are a few more parts to get. I can't wait to give ya'll the update on how this puppy runs. Should be a fun combo in this truck.

I love everything about that. Especially that you're using that trans. I think that air cleaner looks soooo cool on top of that LS engine. Nice work.

Re: Carb'ed 5.3L build
I'm going to mount the coil packs behind the engine and low, I'll just make a bracket. You can use all-thread, some nuts and a couple of tabs.
As for the oil bath, that's ok, I'm not 100% on it yet. I think it will make more sense when the truck is all done and together though. Didn't want to do chrome, cadillac is overdone, dual snorkel not so much, I'm keeping my eyes open for one of this style:

Re: Carb'ed 5.3L build
Dunno, I really like the oil bath! That motor might pull enough air though that the oil would soon follow!!!

Re: Carb'ed 5.3L build
Let's hope it's pulling vaporized gasoline/air at a perfected stoichometric ratio! Well, maybe I'll just make the air cleaner a surprise then, something to keep 'em guessing. IF I do use it I'll be converting to a paper element and drilling 1" holes around the bottom for airflow.

Re: Carb'ed 5.3L build
LSx engines don't have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump. The Demon carb I'm using requires the typical 6-7psi fuel pressure so I'll be using something like the Holley Red or equivalent mounted close to the fuel tank with a good filter. I'm still using the in-cab tank, sending unit and gauge (converted to 12v of course).

Re: Carb'ed 5.3L build
MSD 6010, it's a stand-alone controller for LSx engines. Has connections to the coil packs, crank and cam sensors, MAP sensor, 12v, tach and ground. Best part is that you get to set the timing curve with a laptop.

Re: Carb'ed 5.3L build
That is just awesome! a friend of mine just crashed his 2002 GMC sierra and bent the frame on the back portion of the truck but the engine still purrs along nicely, so I may just pick it up from him with the tranny. I wonder how easily a MegaSquirt III would connect to the stock connectors... Either way, very nice looking set up there! I like the color you painted the block and how you made something new look retro!

Re: Carb'ed 5.3L build
Just came across this thread while looking for info on intakes and cams for the same motor swap on my 55 2nd. Do you have this on the road yet? If so how are its street manners with that intake and cam combo? I really like the looks of your motor with the Victor Jr. on it. But I'm worried about how much low end torque I'd be missing out on by not going with a dual plane intake. Then again, I've never ridden in a classic truck with a 5.3 and don't know if I would even notice it.
