Blazer/Suburban fuel tank crossmembers in K30 frame?

Hello all,

I know many here have converted from the saddle tanks to a Blazer/Suburban tank with success, but my question is: are the factory crossmembers for the tank a direct fit into a K30 frame ('84 cab & chassis to be exact)? I know it'd be easy to fabricate something, but I'd rather just use them if they are a good fit. Don't see why they wouldn't be, as the channel height is smaller back there and looks to be the same size. Anyway, would like to hear from any who have done this...

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Blazer/Suburban fuel tank crossmembers in K30 frame?

I have done this.

The rear cross member fits very close approximately 3/16" short (i just bolted mine) most likely due to stretching of the C-frame.

The front cross member needs a lot of "adjustment" to make it fit due to the kick up in the frame in the pickups over the axle.

I Have a 1987 C30 regular cab what has as semi custom air suspention so a 31 gallon tank was selected to allow the watts link to fit. There is just enough room for the 40 gallon tank to fit but you have to have the rear cross member at the very back of the frame and it will be tight at the diff. Like at most 1-2 inches.

Some good bump stops will be required. Also the filler neck will need a notch in the bed especially if you want the filler in the stock blazer/ sub location. Or patch the old filler and have an in bed filler.

Any other questions?

Re: Blazer/Suburban fuel tank crossmembers in K30 frame?

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. Don't suppose you took any pics at the time, did you?

As for the fit, you mentioned the kick up over the axle. Don't the K5's have the same hump in the frame? I've always thought that from the axle back they were nearly the same, but I'm not sure.

As for the bump stops, I only plan to use a 25 gallon tank (no 31 or 40 gallon here ) in the stock Blazer location. For the filler neck, I'll likely just run it out the side (as I am mounting a dump body).

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Blazer/Suburban fuel tank crossmembers in K30 frame?

Great pics, thanks!! So it looks like at least the rear crossmember would be worth finding, if not both. Any idea if they're the same for a Suburban (tank itself is, so they should be; never know though ) and if so, just up to '87 or into the 'early '90's? Look forward to seeing the final install.

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Blazer/Suburban fuel tank crossmembers in K30 frame?

I just did this on my crew, it has a one ton frame.
I used both front and rear crossmembers. I welded them in.
There are pics in my build thread, or I'll hunt them later and post them here....

Re: Blazer/Suburban fuel tank crossmembers in K30 frame?

Mine as it sits today. (in storage)

1 ton frame, bolted in.

I had to modify the front cross member in order to give clearance for the fillerneck. (want to be in stock location) and to have the tank sit level in the frame.
