1964-66 chevy Power steering
I'm sure theres already been a thread here some place but I have not seen it yet so I'm asking:
Has anyone here done a Power steering conversion on the 1964-66 trucks? What did you use to do it? How did you like who it turned out??

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
I did it to my 64 inline 6... To put it simply. BEST MODIFICATION TO DATE. I love it! I used the CPP kit, original chevy power steering pump brackets, old style chevy pump, O'reilly auto replacement pressure hoses and a rebuilt steering box. The worse part about the hole thing... the CPP kit... The parts quality is meh and several of the fasteners where the wrong length, thread, size or all three. I'm lucky I had a shop on hand with all that kind of stuff in reach or I would have been screwed. BUT there are other options... I highly recommend getting in touch with LILRED66 on here, his name is Tony. He is a avid restoration expert on these trucks and makes a power steering kit that is much more complete. I've seen the kit first hand and realized I made a big mistake buying the "name brand"

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
Thanks DPowers
A power steering conversion is definitely worth the effort. The parts are readily available and it is easily done in a weekend. The only exception is if you have a 292 I6. The power steering pump brackets for those are extremely hard to find and $$$$$ when you do find one. Let me know if you're interested in a steering box plate, or anything else that I offer. Links are in my signature line.

Do you have any pics of your brackets? I made some work on mine...but am unsure if they are correct.

Does someone have a photo of one? Do they make aftermarket options? |

Details and pictures are in my build thread "Bubba's recyling project" 60-66 build section. I am very pleased with the way it turned out, and it drives wonderfull. Recommending you put the disc brakes on also , you will not regret it. Captainfab makes a quality product and it is easily installed to use the newer style 70s gearbox. PS> find a sway bar off a mid 70s truck- It improves the cornering tremendously and takes away the "push" and "roll".

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
My '66 is currently using a, shall we say "rigged," power steering setup. It works, but it's not pretty and it leaks. When we go through and rebuild the truck properly (soon) we will be using the front pieces/parts and such off of a newer model truck so that things work a bit better.

I consider power steering is a modern option well worth considering in a street rod. I consider power disc brakes a requirement. Safety should always come first.

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
If I was to use a power steering gear box off of a 87 model truck, will i have to use all of the steering components off of the same year truck?

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
In my opinion it is easier that way. If you don't have the complete '87 steering linkage, you can use your original without much problem. If you're converting to front disc brakes, you will likely need a special adapter type adjusting sleeve for the tie rods. There was a member that not llong ago mentioned that he may have founf outer tie rods that would eliminate the need for the adapter sleeve, but I haven't heard a comfirmation on that. I typically just convert to the later model steering linkage. Even though you will have to drill holes for the newer idler arm, it is still simpler IMO.

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
I have already installed front disc brakes with drop spindles, how exactly does that affect the power steering installation?

Rickey-Lee.
The 2 different installs won't affect one another. However now you have the best of both worlds. Easy steering for the parking lots and easy breaking for when that kid pulls out infront of you. Cal. |

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
I will be completing the conversion on my 66 pretty soon. I rounded up my donor parts that were pulled from an 82 1/2 ton ( steering box and pump/w hoses) that have been sitting in the shed for three years. I have no idea how the pump mounts but I think I'm missing a bracket for the backside of the pump. This pic shows the same front bracket but for the life of me I cant locate any rear brackets. The pump does have the stud sticking out of the back of the pump. Looks like I need to hit up a salvage yard......
PM me for any info on this bracket and what year it came off of Last edited by CustomCab66; 09-22-2014 at 05:38 PM. Reason: Request info |

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
The long water pumps weren't used until '69 in the cars and '73 in the trucks. I would look for a truck application for the PS pump brackets.

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
Is this a long or short waterpump?
Is it the long or short waterpump that is needed for mounting a power steering pump?

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering
That would be a long water pump.
http://www.chevytech.com/2c41o2.html You can use either style as long as all the pulleys and brackets are the same. Just make sure the pump, pulleys, and brackets match. The long pump setup would be easier to find in a salvage yard since they were all long pumps since 1969. Tip - a short water pump hugs close to the timing cover where a long pump will have some space between the pump and timing cover.
