Re: Help my uncle id his truck and motor

vin#4c144161xxxx = 4=1964 / C=2 wheel drive / 14= half ton 115" wheelbase / 4=pickup (after the last "4" there should be a letter which will ID the assembly plant location in the U.S. - a "1" (your case) indicates Oshawa, Canada assembly plant - then 61XXXX etc would be the sequential assembly number.

(so, good news, you know you have an original 1/2 ton shortbed - you now know it hasn't been a cab swap victim - not that there's anything wrong with that, just nice to know on one's own truck if it's ever happened) - you can also cross match the truck VIN tag with the VIN stamped into the front left frame rail - can usually make it out by leaning over the left front fender and looking down at the top of the frame rail near the steering box area, etc. You also know it was originally a Canadian plant built truck.

Truck 327 not available in 64 - first year in trucks was 66.
But you do have a 327 - and appears you have a very SWEET one...
Engine ID# F0526 SD = F=Flint (motor plant) / built on May 26 / SD=1962 vette 327 (originally equipped with a powerglide, special hi perf engine - 350hp, 4 bbl carb).

Hope that helps. Wish I could buy a truck and then find out that's what was in it! Nice truck - 64 short step with a big window and a 62 vette 327... I'd hang onto that puppy...

Re: Help my uncle id his truck and motor

You will need the casting date to positively identify the engine. SD in 1962 was 300 hp. The first year for 350 hp was 65. I am guessing the SD code was used for more than one year.

Re: Help my uncle id his truck and motor

raycow - excellent point, I agree (350 hp not available yet).

here's the ref I used for this:
http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...s-suffix-6.php

and I have used in the past. Now I'm wondering just how valid it is...

thanks for pointing out raycow.

Cole - you may want to cross-check that engine code with a different source. the link above states 350 hp 327 (in 1962) but I believe raycow is absolutely correct - that was not available yet. 62 327's were available with 250hp, 300hp, and 340 hp in the carb'ed version and 360hp for the fuelie (referenced elsewhere, not the above link and the above link matches these numbers at least)- but no 350 hp 4 bbl version. so maybe it's just the wrong hp number in the link's chart above - or maybe it's got a different meaning altogether. sorry maybe slightly bum gouge on the eng id.

He was able to get the ID # off the back of the block (drivers side rear of block)

#3782870

Anyother info would be great......he is debating if he should keep this or the built 383 he has laying around.

Re: Help my uncle id his truck and motor

3782870 = 62 -67 327 cu in - block used for 250-375 hp, 2-Bolt mains/Truck/Pass

So, combining this with the 'SD' - would appear to be a 1962 300hp 327 block. I think that's a safe bet.

A less safe bet is what it came out of. I've got one ref that says SD was a vette motor - but that was also the ref that said it was (incorrectly) a 350hp motor - so take the vette part with a grain of salt also. I believe 300hp 327s were also available in 'full size' cars in 62 (i.e. impala, bel air, biscayne).

hope that helps.

Sweet looking truck CT
I guess the next logical Q on the motor would be,Does it the have the 327 heads on it?

Looks like he has truck heads offf a 1968....

Good news is they seem to be pretty good heads but by no means is this a numbers matching 327.

3947040....68......327.........."Right angle" casting identifier, 64cc chambers, good HP head, used in trucks, no accessory holes
