Shop heater - dont know where to post?

Hey, I was wondering what you guys were using as a shop/garage heater in the winter time (as cold as -35 C, or -31 F). If it's efficient, what works best, cost of installation, etc. I just aquired a garage (finally possession Nov. 24) that is 22ft x 20ft (hardly big enough... but big enough for one project at a time....)

Is a radiant heater, or forced air better? Gas or electric? Oversized or just big enough? Run it all winter long, or just when in the garage? The garage is fully insulated.

Sorry for all the questions guys, but I gotta start somewhere!! Thanks in advance for any input!!

I have a 30 X 56 X 12H shop and use a 100,000BTU overhead radiant gas heater. Never heat more than 60 degrees so no need to be adding clothes when going outside. Set thermostat on 40 at night, and store anything that might freeze under it. It won't heat the whole barn that warm, but stays nice and warm near or under it. What I like is it heats objects, not air. Works great in our windy, cold weather. Our weather is not as extreme as yours, but similar.
Don't know how much gas it uses, as we get free natural gas from wells on our place. Gas companies don't write those leases anymore, but our lease was signed in 1939. I really like the heaters in any outside buildings we need to heat.
I've used radiant LP heaters that mount on top of small LP bottles in small places and point them at where I'm working. They seem to be pretty easy on gas and work good when your in front of them. Whatever you use, I vote radiant.

My garage is 16x24. I have a 40,000 btu propane bullet heater. It gets hot enough that you can work in a t shirt in 20 degree weather. I turn it off after a while usually. I have a 100 lb tank and I usually fill it 2-3 times a winter. I work in the garage 2 or 3 days a week usually for 5 or 6 hours a day.

my shop is a 22 x 24 and i use a wood burning stove, I love the smell of wood burning in the winter time and it keeps me pretty warm

wood burning stove equals big insurance costs since the garage is attached to my house... so thats already out of the question. But I really love the smell of wood burning in the winter as well.

I just picked my up this morning, got myself a woodstove. In my area fire wood is readily available, and isn't all that expensive, also my parents have 26-27 acres of mostly woods, so I should have plenty of firewood. Love the heat a wood burner puts out.

The last pic in this link is how I heat. Maxx heater, propane but can be natural gas. Worth every penny and safely vented.

My garage is also attacted to the house I have an old trailer (moble home) gas furnace on a thermostat....it works very well is 120 volt and an easy install and cheap/easy to find...as far as how much you plan to be out there....I ussually run it for 15/20 min before I go out and it heats up well...all so will depend on your insolation...if I'm going to be out there again the next day I'll set it to 40/45

I have a 22x28 insulated shop and use a modine 90000 btu natural gas unit heater. I leave it set at 45 and when i work out there i turn it up to 70. Doesn't run much if you keep it on since everything is warm. cost about $25.00 a month to run.

I have a 80000 btu natural gas overhead radiant tube heater in a 24X40 garage. I'm not a big fan of the forced air heaters being noisy and blowing on you all the time. My heaters nice and quiet. But, you'll want a tall garage or you'll burn the top of your head with an overhead radiant. My climate is fairly close to yours LOL.

My daughter and I just installed a woodstove (that we got for free) today. I found some triple wall chimney pipe on Craigslist for $50. Haven't tried it out yet. But it should bake us out of the garage. Its as big as my dad used to heat our house in Wisconsin, and the garage is only a 2 car.

This is the woodstove we installed. It took the garage from 53 degrees to 70 in about an hour, using some scrap 2x4's. It is brick lined, so radiated heat for a couple of hours after. It was NICE!!
