How hard would it be to remove the exhaust manifolds from my 80 2500, 350ci
Would the bolts break? Any tips? |

Re: exhaust Manifold removal
a 50/50 mix of acetone and atf is supposed to work far better then any pb blaster, wd40, kroil, liquid wrench whatever. I use an impact, it works alot better then a ratchet.

Re: exhaust Manifold removal
the acetone and atf may work better but around here buying acetone will get you followed home by the cops. has something to do with crystal meth.

Re: exhaust Manifold removal
figures, they'd end up doing that here too probably. I never tried it but want to, LOL not making meth and not having cops follow me home. But try it as a penetrating oil to break apart rusty crap.

hit em with a bar then back them out with a gun... will never break one doign that.. and it's the fastest way as well.

Re: exhaust Manifold removal
If you have A/C you will need to remove the compressor and cut a part of the bracket off to fit over the front header tube. You will most likely need a spacer on the first or 2nd bolt of the headers as well to put the A/C bracket back on. You may have to remove the alternator as well... but other than that it is really pretty straight forward. I wouldn't do this unless you are planning on taking the truck to the exhaust shop in a day or two as your headers most likely won't bolt up to your stock exhaust.
I could have made the cut cleaner and not so square but I was borrowing the tools and the shop (carpeted garage) so I needed to get it done. That and I almost got my head taken off with the sawzall but that is a different story. lol.

Re: exhaust Manifold removal
The key word here is soak soak soak soak.....you can"t soak exhaust manifold bolts enough. if they break you have to tap them out and heli coil them.
I hate doing it...if you break one play stupid and ask your buddy who knows how..

Re: exhaust Manifold removal
Good advice guys thanks, I may just go to the exhaust shop?
I have a pair of 91 mans, do you think they will fit on my 80? Both are 350 blocks. Never would have guessed that thinning out Auto Transmission Fluid would work but it makes sense. I only your acetone to clean. |
