Trucks hard to re start..

As expected at this time of year. the truck first thing in the am takes a lil more to start them when it's warm... mine on the other hand when it's warm is harder to start. i have to hold the petal to the floor and it will barley start and spit and sputter than even it self out and drive fine.... this is MOST of the time other times she Fires right up after shes warm like its a new truck... so i duno :S

My 87 CC was hard to start this morning also, the TBI engines are notorious for that. Is yours Carb'd?

Maybe a problem with the choke. I'd start looking in that area first. Just my .02

oh well that works out i'm getting a new carb here in a bit. weird thing is just went out and she fired like a new truck :S

It sounds like you may have a faulty needle and seat in your carb.

What you say about your pedal sounds like a fuel flooded engine, not a choke issue. Thats pretty much the same procedure to start a flooded motor, hold the pedal to the floor, crank it over, wait for the engine to fire, and it will run crappy till the excess fuel is burnt up.

A sticking needle and seat would explain why sometimes it starts fine, and sometimes it doesn't, it could possibly not be sticking all of the time. If its only doing it to you when its warm, you might be cooking a fuel line somewhere thats too close to a heat source, or else it sits, cools, and the excess fuel evaporates any other time.

Hmmm ok thanks for the advise will have to look into it also i go by Dru and spell it the same. never heard of anyone else going by it :P you get lots of funny looks when they see how you spell it?

heat insulator gasket. fuel is boiling in the carb when it's shut off causing it to not have fuel to restart once warm, get a spacer or heat nsulator gasket. Had it happen to my 85 mcss and once I put on the edelbrock heat insulator gasket it stopped it for good.

The engine is basically flooded since the fuel got in when it boiled and you have to floor it to let air back into it.

I have had both problems - vapor lock and stuck choke. Suggest you pop the hood and remove the air cleaner lid after the truck is hot and has been stopped. Before you attempt to start it check to see if the choke valve is open all the way, both before and after you depress the accelerator. If it is not fully open then that is one problem. I have always converted to manual chokes on my squares - cheap and sure fix for choke problems - you control it
When you start it hot - depress the accelerator all the way to the floor once and hold it there - truck should start, though it may seem to struggle to turn over - stumble a bit - this means gas evaporated/vapor lock condition. I still have this condition but just wrapped the fuel line with heat resistant wrap, which helped some. I don't want to add heat insulator gasket because the ones I saw would raise the carburetor too high and all of the attachments would not line up properly (air cleaner exhaust pipe, linkage, etc.) I had that setup on my 73 454 and it did not stop the hot start problem, but did mess up all of the attached items.

with tbi i always waited for the fuel pump to stop before turning the key
now thats what i do in my grand am,as it's security system is no starting PITA
