HELP! Need Steering Column, Please!
My shifter broke this weekend, internally, where the shift lever inserts. I drive a 1969 GMC 1500 p/u, standard transmission ("3 on the tree"), NOT power steering.
I need a complete steering column, can anyone point me in the right direction, please? No one around Mobile can locate one. HELP! Bud, staceys4@hotmail.com |

Re: HELP! Need Steering Column, Please!
I actually FOUND one, across the Interstate from where I work, in brand-new wrecking "U-Pull-It" yard! Had exactly the piece I needed in the exact year/model truck like mine. Since I wasn't familiar with the breakdown, I found (after I pulled my column out) that all I needed was the top shifter cup. As I was lubing the column & shifter mechanism up, the cup came off in my hand...so, since my column was already well-lubed & tight, I just put it on top of my column, installed it back in the truck & away I went! Got an education, too. If I'd've known the cup would have just pulled off the top of the "new" column, I'd've never pulled it our of the truck, BUT, I do have a column now, just in case....the cup was stuck hard on the top of the "new" column, due to being in the weather and the lube being washed off of it....
Now the truck shifts tight, not sloppy, like the old shift cup. I realize now, after looking at it, that it'd been broken for awhile, I was just compensating for it, thinking my column was worn out, until it finally let go. It's now in three pieces...suprising, what we put up with, not knowing.... Thanks all youse guys who read & checked...I know you had good thoughts! In case anyone needs some parts, there's a '64 Apache truck and a '66 Chevy truck over there, as well as a couple more, the years I forget. If you're in the Mobile, AL area, e-mail me and I'll point you to the yard! staceys4@hotmail.com Bud |
