Getting a 69 C30 wrecker!
It will soon be mine. Came into a local junkyard so I'm going to rescue it.
It's a 1969 C30 wrecker. Wrecker part is made by wreck master. It's a one owner truck too! Plans are to restore it to it's former glory. Just use it for my own needs, not for a business. Truck is red on red, 350, 4 barrel, 4 speed, 4.10 rear. Complete except dollys on back are missing. A little rough around the edges but a good fixer. I even have the original protect-o-plate and manual. I'll post some pics when I get it hopefully in a week or so. Right now it's buried in a sea of junk cars! Do we have any other tow truck owners here? If so, I'd love to see your trucks. Bob

Sweet truck! I love it.
Do you have any shots of it in action? I'm far too young to have ever seen these wreckers at work. I only see the wheel lifts used these days. I've often stared and wondered just what the riggin's do. Keep posting, I want to see this unit complete. |

Re: Getting a 69 C30 wrecker!
My first summer job when I was 15 was with a local mechanic who had a real similar 71 c30. We would ride in that beast to go get trucks from all over the state (that was in 1997). I think riding in that one is what made me love these model truck. Good luck with yours, it's a beaut!

Re: Getting a 69 C30 wrecker!
I haven't found anything either. Our slings are different.Do you have a Braden winch? All the parts are available for them.I only knew mine was a Wreckmaster from the fairlead. It's cast with the name on it.I'd like to bring mine back to it's glory. It's kinda neat as is,too. It has holes where stacks were run.I put a Cheyenne interior in mine.It was a service station rig.I assume yours was, too?Or maybe a repair garage.I've wanted to letter it up (then scrub some off).Just no time.

Re: Getting a 69 C30 wrecker!
I'll have to check the winch to see who made it. I think the PTO is made by Chelsea, that's what's on the knob anyway.
This truck was owned by a body shop near me that bought it brand new although I've never seen it before. I saw the title to confirm it was in their name. I have the protect o plate with the body shop name on it too. Truck was bought at a Chevy dealer a few miles from me. I guess it was purchased as a chassis from Chevy and then had the wrecker part added by a company. I might learn more about it today when I investigate further. I just got done searching more and can't find anything on ebay for wreckmasters. Would love to find some original literature or something.

If I bring another stray home, I might have to sleep in that wrecker!
Feel free to post it on my website though. Always someone looking for 348 & 409's.

Question? Do you guys use these when finish building them? Or just for looks? Either way its cool to see people out there taking them in their hands and bringing them back to life. Thank you for that.

I just like the idea of helping to preserve a piece of history. I'm sure one day these things were all over but how many are left? I literally saved it from certain death, it was in the junkyard for all to pick at it so death was near. That's how it lost it's visors, arm rests and door panels.

Re: Getting a 69 C30 wrecker!
Got it running! I can't believe how good it runs too. I ran a funnel to the fuel pump so it would run on fresh gas and as soon as it hit the carb, it fired right up and never stalled. The choke, choke pulloff and fast idle all still worked like they should. No smoke either! I'm thinking maybe this is original 49K instead of 149K.
I fixed the clutch, it was just the pushrod popped out of the fork. Half the brake system is out but I was able to drive it around my lot. It's AWESOME!!! special K: The winch part has wreck master on it. It also has F.F. Wegener company, Cranbury NJ so that must be the company that sold it. I found a small data plate laying in the glove box with that name too. It has the model number, serial number and capacity. It's an 8,000 lb capacity.

Re: Getting a 69 C30 wrecker!
pretty cool truck bob. when i read your post and you said it was a one owner truck in a local junkyard i knew it was gonna be vic's truck. i've tried a few times over the years to buy that truck and was always told how it was a great truck buy vic. the only problem was what he wanted for it..........$3000 i thought he was crazy. glad to see it will get saved, good luck on the build. Devin.
