header idea
i dont know about you guys but i dont like the way headers on our trucks hang low. i was just thinking abuot different options. 82-92 camaro headers should fit. the 81-87 truck manifolds are the same as the 82-92 camaro low performance manifolds, aernt they? just a thought. anybody else got a good idea or tried somthing of this nature before?

I used some made for a '69 Camaro, but it took some mods to get them in there. They tuck up in the truck real nicely though. I had to modify the motor mount clam shell on the driver's side, build a crossmember and shift linkage, and had to notch the frame on both sides of the motor. Like I said, it took some work but I think it was worth it in the end. Here's a pic....pic

I think some guys are using 67-74 Chevelle shorty headers from Dynomax. I am lowering my truck to 4/6 and will need new headers as well. I will probably order the Hedman Elite shortys for Chevelle for a couple of reasons. 1. Flanges are 3/8 and I never had a problem with my current ones as far as leaks.
2. The 14 guage tubing keeps the noise down better than thinner wall tubes. 3. The primary tubes are 1 5/8 vs. 1 1/2 tubes on the Dynomax. The negative is that the Dynonax ceramic headers look much better and come with a lifetime warranty. Do your homework I hope to be converting to a big-block this summer and was told that the full length Chevelle big-block headers work with a double hump crossmember.

1Faast - They are Hedman Hustlers that are ceramic coated. I can get you a part # if you want, I have the receipt around here somewhere. Matt |

Typically the Chevelle headers will work. You can also use the 88-99 pickup headers. A friend used a set of those.
As for full length Chevelle BBC headers, I can tell you that my buddies WON'T go in a pickup without some MAJOR modification to the truck, so check an double check depending on what kind you have.

I'm sure he will chime in, but low84 has shortie headers on his truck. I'm pretty sure the are chevelle headers and he didn't have to do any notching to get his in.

Or you could save your self all that trouble and spend more and get some JBA shorties made for our trucks...no trimming..no notching and no fabricating. hehe

lmao!! Well I am hardly made of money...lol But yeah they did cost a lot...but you know..I am very satisfied with them and seriously doubt they will ever need replaced. No leaks still and not tightened once in 1.5 years.

i do have the dynomax chevelle shorties and they fit and work great. when you go over 400 hp though you will really benifit from a full length. after i drop the new motor in this summer i am going to consider what matt did, with the custom tranny crossmember and camaro full lengths, but he tells me its not too fun

Ok, I finally found the blasted receipt for those suckers....the part # at Summit is HED-65003. Also, they are 1 3/4" primaries, I forgot to answer that question before, sorry about that 1Faast. With the shorties that everyone is talking about you shouldn't have to do any mods to the truck to get them to fit, but these are full length and don't hang down below the frame, that's why all the fabrication and "notching" had to be done. Getting some that didn't hang down was what I wanted and these fit nicely as far as that goes. I have about a 6/8 drop and most other full headers would be sitting on the ground. The only real pain was making the crossmember and making sure the tranny mounts at the right angle. But I like the performance of the full length and with my setup I felt they were needed and worth the work. I guess it all just depends on what you want and what you feel should be put in there.
Ryan, let me know when you ready to put some in, I'll head that way and see if I can't give you a hand. I can bring the truck down there so we have something to go off of... Take care, Matt |

I need a full length header that will fit a SBC and NOT come below the frame rails. Also want them to be coated. No cutting the frame. JUST bolt in!! I know this a lot to ask BUT it has to be out there!!
