Tach Installation
I just installed a tach I bought from Autozone. A cheap $45 whiteface. It is one of the simplest and easiest thing I have done to this truck EVER!!!! Even the bolt on stuff was harder.... It took me about 45 min. in all. It's cool beans! I didn't hook it up to the best ground ever, so when I turn off the engine, it jumps to 4000 before going back to 0. Hehe. I'm too lazy to run a ground all the way from the battery to the tach. I put it under the steering column to the left. Not in the best spot ever, but a great temparary place untill I get a strap to put it on the steering column.
I'm replacing the steering wheel tomorrow due to the old one being torn up & the mounting holes are striped. Only two bolts are holding my steering wheel on right now. It wiggles! The LED project will continue this weekend. I've been in Sacremento every weekend for a month so I haven't had time. I've been using a metal coat hanger to run alot of the wires and had to drill out rivits in the rubber door wire guard (is that even what it is called???). I'll keep you guys posted.

Have you ever taken off a steering wheel before? I'm not trying to affend you at all but the bolts there don't hold the steering wheel on. The large nut does. The holes there are for the horn ring and when that is off the holes are for the bolts with the steering wheel puller to pull the wheel itself off. If you need help let us know. Alot of us have done this before.

Another thing just for info. Some tachometers have what is called an "air core" this causes the needle to not seat on "0 rpm" when off. I do not know if you have this type of tach, but that may be something to think about if your tach keeps doing it even with a good ground.
Also just for reference. There is a ground terminal type thing near the emergency/parking brake. You really cant miss it once you look over there. Just get a female spade connector attach it to your ground wire and slide it on. You should have a perfect ground without having to run wires very far at all.

Actually, I've replaced plenty of steering wheels. I know the large nut holds the whole wheel on, but without the other three, you can turn the steering wheel all you want, but your wheels won't turn! I had a hell of a time with the @&$@ horn spring & body. It looks like someone sawed part of the tube off, so I had to super glue it. Well, the spring wouldn't go back in, & it decided it had been super glued one too many times and stopped sticking together!!! I ended up just soldering the end of the wire & bypassing the spring all together. That was tricky, as the other end of the wire to solder was at the bottom of the tube. THAT took a couple trys! Not to mention, the steering wheel is not straight due to the stupid kit! I guess I'll just have to live with it. The other Grant steering wheel was on crooked too so I guess it is just Grant & their wacky ways...
Yeah, my tach does have an air core. It is starting to jump to 7000 rpm when I shut it off, just as long as it doesn't jump all the way to the end I'll be good. I'll have to look for that ground thingy-mabober. I have it grounded on a screw that holds the drivers side footwell trim on, so I KNOW it is not a great ground.
