Exclamation is original SW will fit this column???

hello

im thinking of change my truck to auto tranny...so i will change the column..i found this nice one but i dont know if that will fit the original steering wheel??

i want to keep the original SW

IMO I doubt it will, most aftermarket columns you see advertised explicitly state, they will not fit factory SW.

Plus your braking brake bolts up to the bottom of the column, you would have to modify the column or relocate the parking brake. A member on this board just sold a factory auto column for 150 so you can find one that is cheaper and will bolt in.

To the best of my knowledge the splines never changed from when they started using them (in the 30’s?) until at least 1984, but there are at least two differences between the 55-68 & 69-84 attachments. The outer diameter of the later column is larger than the early models. In order to make the early wheel look correct, there is an adapter kit that provides a ring to attach to the back of the wheel, which matches up the size of the wheel to the larger column.

The bigger problem is the depth of the turn signal mechanism and locking/hold down plate within the newer column (essentially how high up the shaft sticks out of the column). I bought the adapter kit for mine, and attempted to install one of the smaller retro 59 Impala wheels (which mounts exactly the same as an original 60-66 truck wheel). My column is a 69-84 aftermarket model from Butch’s Rod Shop (long since out of business). Some of the 69-84 columns are like mine having the turn signal mechanism and upper locking plate set too deep in the housing, while others have the switch and plate assemblies mounted nearer the top of the steering shaft.

Even though the splines matched up, it was impossible to install the wheel because the plastic back of the wheel ran into the top of the column housing before the hub could seat on the splines, and I could barely get the nut to engage the first threads on the shaft. With or without the adapter ring, the wheel hit the column and when I tried to tighten the steering shaft nut, the wheel was clamped to the housing and could not be turned.

This may or may not be a problem with the column you’re looking at.

For installing the new column and keeping the factory parking brake, I simply drilled the original plate and attached the column to the plate with a muffler clamp. I’ve seen more elaborate methods, but this one’s is cheap, very inconspicuous, and been working fine for almost 20 years.

Do you even have to change the steering column?
The PO of my 65 said it had a three on the tree and it now has a three speed automatic
My steering column doesn't have a shift indicator so I'm tempted to believe it's the original column, am i wrong?

is SW the steering wheel? sorry stupid question

I don't know how it works but it shifts perfect just like it was meant to be
It doesn't move forward or back like a three on the tree, just smoothly up and down through the gears
I don't know if he changed the shifting mechanism or if that's just how it works when you hook it up to an automatic

here's a pic, probably not what you were looking for, but you can see there is no shift indicator on the column, I just count the clicks
for that reason I may buy a newer column and power steering

There's no "need" to change the column, just owner preference. Many people prefer a floor shift, or want to retain the older column and leave the key on the dash board. I'm assuming within this thread SW does indeed mean steering wheel, since Stewart Warner wouldn't make much sense.
