drag racing rear suspension

I'm new here, I really like to see I'm not the only one racing there big hunk of steel. My question is what type of rear suspension set ups are you guys running. I have a 71 C10 LWB/455 Buick bored and stroked to a 472 CID 3.73 gears. I can stomp it from forty and blow the tires off and from a dead stop use you can guess what happens from there.

stock rear trailing arms ,anti-roll bar, and some use coilover shocks, basic stock rear setup. slicks is the first thing i would do 28x10.5 with your set up,and lose the front sway bar, this just gets things started for you, the track is the only place you can start the tuning process. vince

Why lose the front sway bar? What does that do for the truck?

Ditto, street tires are never gonna stick with that kind of torque. Even the Drag radials and slicks will have a hard time hooking on the street.

Kudos for running a Buick...as you can see from my signature, I'm a little partial to the BOPs (Buick, Olds and Pontiacs). As the others mentioned, going to a slick will help at the track. You can probably get away with investing in a set of adjustable rear drag shocks. And, if you can, try making small adjustments to the pinion angle. Start by going down by one degree increments to see if you are able to reduce your 60-foot times.

What do you guys think about the tube style trailing arms and cross members offered by the aftermarket, are they worth the money or just weld up the existing ones.

I welded up my existing ones then braced them top and bottom with 1/8x 1 1/2 flat bar,installed new bushings in the front of the trailing arms and use Rancho adjustable shocks in the back, my best 60 is 1.64 but i am still tuning.Save your money on the tube style ones and buy a good set of slicks

I use the stock trailing arms with coil-overs and an anti-roll bar. I did not use stock bushings though. I use a mon-ball from Stock Car Products if I am not mistaken. Had to modify the opening in te trailing arm, and weld the mon-ball housing in the arm. 1.34 60' times for mine. Paul

If you don't drive it on the street much just take it off. If you drive it primarily on the street just unhook one side from the lower control arm when you go to the track.

Yeah it's just a strip truck. Will Not be driven on the street. Is it just 2 bolts to get it off or what?

4 bolts hold the bar to the frame then 2 bolts or links to the lower control arms.

Tires are first and foremost, as the stock suspension is pretty darn good as it sits. I used to be able to light my 295/50/15 Radial TAs on the street at 60mph+

Let me just say that Mickey Thomson drag radials are a gift from the heavens. My trailing arms are reinforced with plate steel, and the rubber bushings are replaced with derlin bushings. My truck dead hooks at the track on 275/60/15 M/T DRs.....on air ride.
