The 383 is dead
Long story short the builder robbed me , and use too long of a bolt in balancer wich in turn never got tight and cracked the snub, took it apart .. no steel crank, cast ,.no bushed rods, block was at 60 over not 30 so a huge pile of chit.
SO I have a 400 that I found virgin bore!!! Going 30 over CP pistons, H beam rods, steel crank all scat stuff there. New XR294HR cam, touching up the RHS 220 heads. Valve size is 2.055/ 1.600 , setting compression to 10.7. Should run very well. Killed the forward progess on the truck for the time though So any one need a 4 bolt 60 over block SHould make a nice table Last edited by GMR-PERFORMANCE; 01-12-2011 at 03:24 PM. |

Re: The 383 is dead
Builder is no longer around... he has done this to countless others as well... So at this point it is out of my pocket for the second time. I am doing this engine myself. I was too busy with my own shop at the time and had him do it. I dropped all the parts off to him , so where they went is any ones guess.
Nothing I can do, but the up side is the new engine is going to be a very nice build. I am going to dyno the new engine in the truck so I will know I have. I am doing this build very close to another that was tuned on a engine dyno. It made just shy of 560hp @6500. I have a bit more carb, larger valves , more compression, so we shall see |

Re: The 383 is dead
The perfect example of why you should use a shop that has been recommended by others.
Sucks to hear you got ripped. Good Luck with the new motor.

Re: The 383 is dead
builder is no longer around like not in business, or like in dead moved etc?
Reason I ask, is that I'd come looking for my money..doesn't matter if he doesn't have a biz anymore...if you can find him, make him cough it up. You say he's done this to others? If there are enough, you may be able to take him to small claims.

Re: The 383 is dead
Some blocks can be bored beyond that however you need to see how much core shift is in the block. Easy way is look at the cam boss. If the hole is centered you can go beyond however if it is not , then really not a good idea. Again it may be based on what you use the engine for and what power level you are at or going to be at.
In my opinion money spent on a strong lower end and block is the base ot all good engines. People build homes on the edges of cliffs some times it works other times the house falls off.. The builder is missing at this point.... what I know he may be dead as I am but a small fish money wise compared to several others. I know of one guy that lost 175K on a pair of dart based blown BB for a deep v race boat. |

Re: The 383 is dead
Ditto, The sbc cylinder wall is thin enough. You start putting serious power to a virgin wall and you get enough flex compromise the cylinder. Boring and SBC more than +0.040 is never a part of anything I'd do. Not when virgin 4" bore blocks can be had for less than $100. Not worth the risk of building a $800 motor or a 2,3 or 8 thousand dollar motor in a questionable foundation.
