Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
Looked at this last sunday for parts. Mainly to use the wheels/tires and hitch on my 71 C20. Price was right since he was going to remove the 454. Well he got the engine out on thursday and the weather was pretty nice today (7 degrees but calm and not snowing) so i borrowed a nice GMC crew and rented a trailer. Anyways, it has some nice options and no rust holes or soft spots anywhere on the box that I can see. Front end was supposedly rebuilt and the truck ran great and everything worked. After looking at it some more, I'm having thoughts of putting back on the road- am i crazy? Tabs are current and title is clean.
I really need some opinions on the cab from you guys who have seen alot more of these than i have- it looks good on visor area outside but has holes inside (see photo) Also, needs rockers, corners, floor patch behind seat and maybe a support or two. There is rust through above engine on firewall. Is this a wierd area to rust? Is this cab too far gone? Pretty clean underneath with just surface rust on chassis. Truck was originally a southern SD truck. They use little or no salt there. Look at the white on the trailer- isn't the salt up here in MN disgusting? That is why my truck is in the shed until the first good cleansing rain.

Re: Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
Thanks but I'm not selling any parts now.
Also, anyone know why is the leaf spring listed on the SPID? I thought they were standard on Gmc's?

Re: Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
I'm orig from NE Iowa about 40 miles from Minn line and 12 miles from the mississippi and that truck looks to be in realy good shape for being around there. As far as the rust on the firewall it's nither common or rare . it happens when the cowl area gets filled with debris and then rain or snow sits there and causes that rust and as for the springs on the 1/2 tons coils were stock and yours has the HD susp IMO I would repair that truck

Re: Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
If I were to repair the truck, would you repair the cab or replace the cab?
Looking for more opinions to determine future of this truck!

Re: Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
I think it looks pretty good as long as you can repair that rotten rocker/floor on the drivers side and get a new seat cover. Otherwise it looks fairly straight, if you have the time, patience and some cash I think its repairable. I would start working on the nastiest parts and if you can't get those to look right then start looking at other options, ie) new floor?
As for the leaf spring on the SPID, my mechanic told me that leafs were an option in the 70's and they came stock with coils, thats just word of mouth. my $0.02

Re: Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
The only part of the cab that looks real suspect to me is the rust above the windshield. I have heard that is a bear to fix. Otherwise I dont think it would be too much trouble to fix the rockers, floor, and cab corners.

Re: Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
Yeah, thats what I heard too. Is it pretty easy to find cabs that don't have rust at all in the visor area?

While on the SpID, is the WINDSHIELD GLASS- T1 just another way of calling out tint? If thats the case, isn't it weird that the other windows tinting is not on the SPID?

Re: Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
cab is too far gone, with rust above visors and firewall rust plus everything down below its not worth your time, when you can find one for $300-$500 needing rockers and corners. Part it out or find another cab and fix it up.
IMO, and you guys know I like to part out trucks!!!!!!!!! It would part out good, high hump, BB motor stands, headliner, grill, wing windows, rear bumper brackets, front sway bar, dana 60 rear, AC stuff, etc. Good luck, Randy

I'd atleast find a different cab. Those windshield patch jobs suck IMO.

I agree. I have owned 4 GMC's. #1 was a 1970 1/2 GMC short bed step side with leaf springs. #2 was a 1971 1/2 GMC s/b fleetside with coils. #3 is a 1971 Jimmy 2w dr with coils. #4 is a 1970 1/2 long bed fleetside and it has coil springs. I am pretty sure coils were standard and leafs were optional on both Chevy and GMC. I have seen more GMC with leafs that I have seen on Chevys. I also have a 4x4 72 Jimmy and 72 Blazer but we all know that is the only way a 4x4 came is with leaf springs. Last edited by Big Block; 01-18-2011 at 10:19 PM. |

One other thing to consider. I think you will find more leaf spring were used on, or were ordered on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. I think most 1/2 tons were coil springs.

note the SPID says HEAVY DUTY SUSPENSION for front and rear that is why it is listed

Re: Brought this home today- GMC via GMC
coils where stock as GMC was concidered a Lucury(sp) truck back then and Chevy was the work truck. As for the T1 is for the top 6" or so of the windshield it had a blue top vs the clear top
