8.5" vs. 8.6" 10 bolts:
How does the 8.6" 10 bolt compare to the 8.5" in terms of design and strength?
i think the 8.6 comes in newer 2000 and later 1/2 tons. |

Re: 8.5" vs. 8.6" 10 bolts:
I see a lot of guys going fast on the 8.6 and I don't hear a lot about them breaking anything. I know they have 30 spline axles compared to our 70's to 80's model trucks with 28 splines. I'd imagine they'd be slightly stronger.

Re: 8.5" vs. 8.6" 10 bolts:
So how much power (hp and tq) can each of the rear diff assemblies take?
8.5 1a) 3000lbs with 4.56 gear b) 3000lbs with 3.73 gear c) 3000lbs with 2.56 gear 2a) 2500 lbs with 4.56 b) 2500 lbs. with 3.73 c) 2500 lbs. with 2.56 3a) 1900 lbs. with 4.56 b) 1900 lbs. with 3.73 c) 1900 lbs with 2.56 4) everything identical to all scenarios above EXCEPT with an 8.6 rear. |

Re: 8.5" vs. 8.6" 10 bolts:
I dont think its so much how much power can they take its more or less how hard they get hit when they hook. When I was a kid I had a chevy luv with a 327 in it on the stock rear end. It lived for a long time on street tires. The first time I got the slicks hot and launched it hard it was broken.

It is all relative to what tire you are bolting onto a given differential.
