COPO Truck?
I was out with my wife last night getting dinner. Of coarse we wee driving my truck. wile getting out of the truck at the resturant this guy comes up to talk to me. starts ramblin about some crap from the past. then procedes to tell me his brother bought a truck in 1969 that was a COPO truck. i thought to myself, have another drink buddy. any how i asked if he still had it and no he dosent. no pics either. who would have guessed.
Does any one know if such a truck could be out there? im still thinking its a bunch of bull. but wouldnt it be cool if it were real? Isnt copo just the way the truck was ordered to be built? just thought you guys would like to have a good laugh and somthing to dream about

Re: COPO Truck?
^^ Not exactly true. The two '69 Vic Hickey/Chevy K10s were COPO ordered with a C30 cab (for the roof lights) and an LT-1 pre-production engine.
While most COPO trucks were for fleets and whatnot, I have no doubt that some like the Hickey trucks were hi-po right from the factory. Who knows...maybe one got a 427 and/or M22?

Re: COPO Truck?
i believe research on vic hickeys baja race trucks will show that he built those trucks in his shop not off the chevy production lines as copo vehicles// same story as the talledaga speedway 427 trucks

Re: COPO Truck?
Without documentation, who knows who is telling the truth. If you had the extra money, talked to a helpful dealer, who gets in touch with the central office the ball would start rolling. A period engine, into a period vehicle is possible. There has been cases of 348's being installed in early 60's pickups thru copo.

Re: COPO Truck?
I agree, I did work part time after school for U Haul in the early 80's and their fleet of late 70's F 350's were special ordered with 330 XD engines, not the regular 351 400 type engines found in regular F 350's. The 330XD was a medium duty 2 ton truck engine with better cooling and lower compression. However, the central office would be a lot more interested in helping you if you bought in large quantities.

Re: COPO Truck?
Man this thread made me think of the trucks I saw back when I was looking for my first one. Many times the seller would say "yeah, its got the Corvette 327 in it" I saw one that was a piece, a 68 50th with a lime green step bed and a 327 that he wanted a fortune for because it "has a 'vette motor" in it

Re: COPO Truck?
In '72, Chevrolet could not even sell 1/2-ton Big-Block trucks in California due to emission standards. Rumors/tales of high-performance factory engines being installed in trucks during production are preposterous. The factory simply would not do that (at least in '72). A dealer or special builder (like Yenko or Nickey) could have ordered and installed a different engine for a customer, but not the factory. Didn't Happen!

Re: COPO Truck?
I was just going through some of my old magazines when I was supposed to cleaning my shop. Boxes of old magazines tend to make me forget what I was supposed to be doing heh.
Anyway there was a couple page article in one of em about the Hicky trucks. I should have set it aside and scanned it. I have to go "clean" some more today. Ill see if I can find it again. Unfortunately its in a box that is exactly like 12 other boxes full of magazines lol.

Re: COPO Truck?
COPO doesn't mean hi-performance . That's just what it's so widely known for,the creation of monster motor/low option muscle cars. I wonder what this bar stool expert was referring to. I assume he means it had a 427.

Re: COPO Truck?
Nothing all that special on the COPO trucks I've seen.Mostly paint color on a low option truck with nothing much else to set it apart from any other.I don't have statistics but I seriously doubt that there were 10% total of COPO orders that were Muscle cars or anything oither than fleet/goverment vehicles.Probably most police cars, taxi cabs,Goverment service vehicles, and such were COPO and they probably cost 2/3 what most cars of the same model did because of the mass order.
I'd like to see a COPO Corvette(about a 66-67 model),maybe ordered with a 6 cyl and 3 OTT.Now that would be a hens tooth.
