Looking for mid-late 80's Burb, Have Questions
My wife and I are considering replacing the POS Explorer with a mid-late 80's early 90's 2wd Burb It will be used mainly to tow our 21' camper and as a 2nd vehicle. Are there any things to look out for as far as major problem areas? What year did they start putting fuel injection into them? I called about a 90 that had it last night. The only thing I know is the 6.2 diesel was a dog. What engines were available through these years 305, 350, ??

toms68cst,
The subs received FI in '87. The same square body style of the 81-87 trucks when to '91 with the subs. The engines available were the 350 and 454. I've seen only a few that had the diesel option. Actually I think they are rare too. Most included the 700R4 tranny. The '87+ year model 700R4s are best. Older models had problems. The weakest link is the 700R4. It won't tow in OD unless the tranny is built for it then again most people don't recommend towing in OD anyway. Look for a sub that has the barn doors and not the tailgate option on the rear. The 90-91 models are probably the best available. In '92 subs went to the new 88 truck look. ------------------ Gerardo 1983 Custom Truck TX Plates: "BAD BOW" |

Gereardo, what is wrong with the TG option on 'burbs? They are perfect for camping, BBQ, etc. How many times do you sit on your TG? They are also mre rare then the barn doors.
BTW, Crossy has one for sale here in the "parts" section for our trucks, check it out!

Thanks for the info and heads up guys. I'll have to limit my search to the upper midwest. The two advertised on the parts board are on the east coast. I think I'd also rather have a 350 due to mileage concerns and repair costs.

bigblock73,
I sit on my tailgate alot but it does not have glass on it. Sure it's convinenant but I like the barn doors for loading and unloading. ------------------ Gerardo 1983 Custom Truck TX Plates: "BAD BOW" |

duh!
I know you are smart enough to put the glass down. I just personally think the TG option looks ALOT cleaner than those big hinges on the side when you have barn doors. Barn doors are nice when you are moving stuff though but suck if you are outside, sittin in the back of the burb, eating a hot dog and the wind comes by and slams the door on ya. Hasn't happened to me but I have seen it happen and having a hot dog mashed in your face doesn't look like fun.

Thanks Crews but that might be a little more that I can spend. I'll talk it over with the wife.
What kind of mileage could a 2wd EFI 350 burb get on a good day? BTW, Here's one if it was a little closer to me would have been nice to get. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1821948398

any surb you find make sure, that ther are no cracks in the frame between the rear spring perches. this is a comon place they crack. also make shure the floor runners in the rear of the truck have no rust this can be a major problem with the body sagging.
