How to get your young daughter to like your old beater

When I got the truck running I wanted to drive it all around, but picking up the kids from school in it for my daughter was, well, embarrassing for her. I was telling her everyday we were in it, that someday she would want the truck, and she was having none of it. I had to figure out what I could do to get her to like my beautiful new truck .

So I decided to take a shot at giving her a better version of the truck. Now she's claimed it and the pic is hanging on her wall

I love the combination of the flower graphics and the tough centerline mags! Sounds like you are have a great time with you daughter, which is the most important thing.

Re: How to get your young daughter to like your old beater

I used to refer to my dually as Clifford, and my daughter picked that up. When I traded that for my '74, she called it Clifford too, and it stuck. She just loves that truck, probably almost as much as I do.

That's what my daughter says when we ride the Trailblazer SS around. Then its usually followed by a HUGE smile. Man children are great.

She is also the co pilot of my 84swb. She rides shotgun in her car seat too.

hahaha that brings back memories Mel use to say that all the time in the camaro. Daniel use to ask me if I could take the purple car, cause it was fun to make your butt wiggley in it. etc..

of course this was NOT racing with the kids etc, before someone goes off on that tangent Fast to kids is a big difference then fast in reality.

LOVE the sketch she made of HER truck! That is awesome, well played Dad.

Yes, to put it in perspective this was in an area that was had no possibility of traffic or pedestrains. There were rolling dips in the pavement that made her giggle when I drove through them. Completely safe fun.

Re: How to get your young daughter to like your old beater

My 3 year old likes the mustang and wants to go faster too. But, then she tells Mom that we were racing on the way home! She helped fixxin Papa's truck today. (Making use of those little hands)

Thanks for making this thread, btw. I'll be reading along trying to get ideas. I have two: my youngest girl is a little more than a year and I'm sure I'll come back to this thread. I can think of nothing better than having a project with your kid. And I think they would appreciate something they built alot more than something they picked off a lot. Not to mention the many lessons learned along the way. It's stupid, but when the time comes I'll be devastated if they want an Eclipse or something. I guess I need to keep reminding myself not to burn 'em out on hotrods and stuff.

when mine was a year and a half she claimed it. we just call it the chevy. she is now almost five and some of her friends were admireing the cool truck and she informs them that it is NOT a truck. it is a CHEVY, a very very very old chevy!! (84 chevy) i didn't think it was that old LOL.

I know that's right. I turned Bella on to the convertible a couple of weeks ago, and she loved it. My car became a lot more popular. There's a baby seat on the shotgun side now.

Re: How to get your young daughter to like your old beater

my girlfriend hated my truck when i first brought it home but her dad had a truck just like it when she was a kid so once i got it going we went for a drive.. it rememinded her of driving around with her dad as a kid when she would always sleep on long drives with him.. needless to say anytime we go for a drive she falls asleep from the shake.. so now when ever she keeps nagging me about something i take her for a drive.. peace and quite and i get to drive my truck... win win situation for sure haha

My 2 year old loves tractors. If we go to Tractor Supply it is impossible to leave with out a John Deere toy tractor for her. She has about 8 tractors now. Now I need to find a toy Kubota tractor for here so she has a nice one. LOL.

Gotta love a chick that loves trucks! They are the girls that grow into women that are keepers.
They learn what "practical" means.
They learn that new ain't always best.
They learn the satisfaction that comes from taking care of your own stuff.
Hopefully they have daddies that teach them what a bunch of scum most men are and how to look for a guy with the right qualities...starting with owning a Chevy truck!

Well said. That pretty much somes up the whole father experience parenting a little girl. I gather that we all might have been scoundrels at one time but, having a daughter really puts a spin on the whole situation. My 3 year old (she turns next week) already says that she wants a pink truck!!!!!!!!! When she goes to see my parents on the weekends, she always wants my Dad to put her in his GMC and let her pretend likes she is driving. Makes you feel good when you have at least one female in your house (I have three), who appreciates something old with potential..................................
