Thoughts on ignition

So last night I was talking with my dad about the various "fancy" carbs on the market and the conversation drifted to ignition systems. He's under the opinion that a street car doesn't need an ignition box, just a nice electronic distributor with a vacuum advance and you are good to go.

I was planning on getting a CD ignition box to go along with a new distributor and coil, but the more I think about that conversation the more I think he might be right. My engine certainly isn't stock (383 with AFR heads), but except for a couple runs down the strip for fun it will be a street truck.

So, anyone else think there is no other real benefit to separate ignition box on a street engine?

If it runs like you want it to now then forget bout it, a street car doesn't really NEED it but you may WANT it for more power thats my two cents

Re: Thoughts on ignition

It isn't running at all at the moment, it is on a stand in my garage Carb and ignition are the only two major items I need before dropping it back into the truck.

I'm definitely not going the points route. I'm not that nostalgic

It will be electronic, but just didn't know if there was a real benefit to running a box like an MSD 6A, or one of the various CD boxes, etc.

well I think it depends on what you want from the engine I have a 6al on my crew cab and with the increse gap on the plugs I got a little better milage but I did'nt feel is in the seat of my pants horse power wise but I'm sure their was a small increse

Re: Thoughts on ignition

that might be worth it with gas prices as they are and it isn't a stock engine by any means.

I think what I'll do is get a distributor that can run standalone for now, but allow me to use a box later on if I decide I just have to have it for whatever reason.

Re: Thoughts on ignition

Well your Dad is probably correct but I am going to run a 6al just for the rev limiter because all it takes is a ujoint or something to break and a built engine is soon reving madly with your foot into the throttle
