Cool license plate pics

I was getting ready to re-finish my license plates and when I peeled the stickers off, I actually got to look at a couple complete ones, including the very first one. I just thought it was cool to see old school tags.

Re: Cool license plate pics

I bought a set of original unused plates to run on my 65 and my 63. The rings on the holes are dirty from being mounted to a wall. Should be an easy number to remember. I don't know how it is in other states, but in Idaho you can run the original year of manufacture plates that matches your vehicle. The law states that they have to be clearly legible and in good condition and you cannot restore them. How much they stick to it I am not sure, but they do make you provide a color photo of it. I figured if you found a plate # you liked in good enough shape to pass, but not really looking that good, then get it approved and buy new duplicates from a company that makes them how you want them and run the new ones. Shhh.

Re: Cool license plate pics

I like that red Ohio plate. My wife tells me I have to pick a paint color that doesn't clash with the green Idaho plate. I'm not going to worry about it.

Re: Cool license plate pics

Yes sir. I bought it from the original owner's son. And because of that the original plates stayed and I get to keep them and run them! I know his Dad bought the truck in '60 but 1960 was the last year for metal tags, that's why 61 is the first sticker. You can see the slots where the tag was meant to go. I am still on the lookout for one to run at car shows.

61- That plate looks killer on your black truck.

Re: Cool license plate pics

Mine came with my 65. Plus all the reggy slips till 1988 when it was parked.
There's a guy up Island from me has some Oregon plates. I'll probably see him in May when I go to the swap meet and look for some for you.
My truck was sold new in Coos Bay Oregon at Bay Motors.

Re: Cool license plate pics

I tracked down a set of 1960's from New York since that is where my dad first bought the Burb in 1960. I can't run those here but plan to put them on at some local shows eventually. I am still looking for 1959 Arizona plates that I can use daily.

Who wouldn't want a plate that said "The Beef State"? Just awesome. Sucks they made you put a historical sticker on it though...clearly, it's historical. That's like labeling a roll of toilet paper.

Re: Cool license plate pics

I found my plates at a swap meet for $30. They end in "PG" which are the initials of the club I'm in, Properly Grounded. In Ohio we can run year of manufacture plates as long as it is registered with historical plates.

Don't re finish your plates. Preserve them. Get a can of automotive gloss clear and spray them with 3 coats. They will look like new but will preserve the patina and colors. I do it to all my black plates and I always get people asking me if I had them redone. It looks killer.

Too late man. I think they turned out pretty well. You can see them in the build thread in my sig. The front one was so beat up it had to be straightened and re-done. I am a patina fan just as much as the next guy, but I really love the look of bright classic plates on a patina'd truck.

Re: Cool license plate pics

We had the '65 registered for one year with a 1965 plate. We've since changed to a "Horseless Carriage" registration which is only $17.50 for 5 years here in NM. I run a cool old plate in the front of my '62. It's a 1975 plate, which is the year I was born and it has the number 6562... our two old trucks...
