Idea, any help appreciated

I have this idea of converting my '65 c-10 to push button start.

I suck when it comes to wiring but have an idea of what I want.

My thought is to install the push button start in place of my factory cigarette lighter.

My theory is that one leg of the current switch controls the starter when turned all the way to the right at the momentary position.

I'd like to somehow have the ignition switch become the accessory side while still being required to be turned on to power the starter button.

I am thinking something like this kit:

or this:

Am I out of my mind or is this a simple conversion without hacking to death my Painless harness?

Pretty simple ... turn your key to RUN, then the push button engages the starter.

Move your purple start wire to one terminal on push button, then jump the RUN hot to the other terminal. (that way the push button would only work with a key)

Thanks! I don't know if the wires are color coded the same with the Painless harness but I got what you're saying.

Although how do I make the ignition switch work as an accessory only without powering up the HEI?

I am not opposed to running a toggle switch also that would have to be turned on after the switch is turned "on" prior to hitting the button.

Re: Idea, any help appreciated

find the wire on your ignition switch which goes to the starter , (it will only be hot when the key is turned and held against a return spring )

remove it, take it to the push button on the side where the circuit is completed.
(the side that is only hot when the button is down)

Hook up a 12 volt power supply from the old key switch that is hot only when the key is on to the normally open side of the new push button, voilla you can now start the vehicle with the pushbutton, but the key must be on for your ignition to operate.

Re: Idea, any help appreciated

The old early-series '47 that I learned to drive on had a push button starter on the floor from the factory. It was kind of a hassle to hold down the brake or the clutch, run the starter, and pump gas through it sometimes, though.

It's definitely a good theft deterrent. Can't steal what you can't start.
