motor swap question
okay,
I have a 1986 gmc with a 305/350turbo trans (long bed) I want to pull motor and trans out and put it into a shortwide to turn into a show truck (the 305 has sentimental to me) I have found another truck same year as mine but shortwide that i can get, but i have also found a 92 chevy with a blown up motor. Both had v8s in them would mounts be a problem? is the only thing going to be different with them is styling or is there more work to be done with the 92 for my motor to work? |

Re: motor swap question
305's are not "terrible" motors for a daily driver & can even be stroked. Of course they aren't as nice as a mild 350, but if you already have one & it means something to you then build it man! Just be sure to do some work to the heads to increase the flow - that's the big choke point on those engines! And like he stated - all the SBC's have basically identical mounts & accessories.

Re: motor swap question
Are you sure you can clear the bores with 2.02s and 1.6s? The stock bore is 3.736. The valves themselves take up 3.62 and add the spacing between.

Re: motor swap question
Good point & no - 305's do NOT need 2.02/1.60 valves.... Heck, some 350's don't even need that depending on application & actual head flow... If I did ANY valve work on a set of 305 heads it would of course be the quality valve job (3 angle is MORE than adequate) & maybe a slightly larger exhaust valve only since they are quite small on this head. Other than that just do a little port matching & maybe a little bowl blend & you'll be good.
