do i need to box my frame
Hey I was wondering if I need to box my frame for a street and strip truck with a 496 and about 650ftlbs of torque and 650 hp

I run a stock frame and don't have a cage yet. But I'm not making that much TQ. Just 550hp/500ftlbs at the tires with the old combo on 1 stage.

If you can get the frame stiff as possible it willprobably help to make the truck more consistent to suspension changes. If everything is solid the suspension is doing the work rather than the frame. Just my 2 cents.

Mine is not boxed, but I have a cage that is certified to 7.50. my engine is an 540 BBC, on 2 systems. 1.34 60' times, 5.50 @ 130 1/8 mile. The cage is sufficient. Paul

It's not that hard to do and its cheap insurance. If you have a cage I don't think you will need it. I'm running a Duramax diesel witch weighs about the same as a big block but it dynoed 1250ftlbs at the wheels last year and should have about 1400ftlbs this year. I don't have a cage but did box my frame and I've had no problems.

If you have it apart, now is the time to do it. It is better than second guessing and wishing you had done it later. I boxed a pro-street truck with a lot less torque.
It is a great excuse to get a quality plasma cutter if you don't already have one. If you already have one, get some plate steel and get busy! |

Your choice. IMO, the weight isnt worth it. I just boxed a 6inch section where my watts link attaches and thats it. These are not weak frames. They are plenty thick to hold any power if you have a cage. I highly doubt they would flex or bend without a cage. Like some have said they are in the 9, 10 sec and not boxed.

Is your frame currently modified with any of the cross members removed or the frame notched? Have you removed the inner fenders? If not, you may not need to, but it does depend on what your ET goals are.

There are 2-3 guys here running deep 9's and faster with out a boxed frame with a cage. One of which commented in this thread advising it is NOT needed. I tend to agree that the cage will stiffen it up, even more so than boxing the frame will. Boxing the frame is just going to add weight and slow you down.

being that theoretically 200 pounds in a car with a thousand hp slows the car down by .24 seconds, boxing the frame in my opinion is just a little reassurance. the plate to box the frame from the rear all the way to about a foot from the trans x-member only weighs 80 lbs if 1/4" is used.

If any boxing would be done, I'm thinking just a small section where each cage tube is welded to the top flange of the frame, just to add ridgitity to the top flange. And there is absolutely no reason to use 1/4" plate. We're not talking about a semi here, 10 ga. would be just fine.

Mine is not boxed.. And i plan on spraying mine, will put it in the low 10's. Cage comming soon....
