Driveshaft time

So I have NEVER done anything with a driveshaft in my automotive life. I can replace a u-joint fine, but have never measured for or really worked with a drive shaft.

The truck is my 66 short bed step side.
Old setup WAS 355 w/700r4 to 12 bolt
NEW setup IS lq4 w/4l80e to 12 bolt.

I thought I might be able to have the existing shaft modified to fit, but its actually too short, not too long. How do I know what ends I need, and how to measure for the shaft? I have read a few different instructions but it seems like the measurements I get, don't really make sense against what I'm reading.

Any help? Pics would be great.
Also, do I need to buy a seperate yoke for the trans? or does it come on the new shaft?

Re: Driveshaft time

If you have a reputable driveline shop in your area, you can call them and tell them what trans you have, and measure from center of rear u-joint to the end of the tranny tailshaft, they will make you one and balance it

Re: Driveshaft time

I bookmarked this back in 07 when I started researching a LS swap.

Re: Driveshaft time

This is the Dana-Spicer u-joint catalog. Look under conversion u-joint kits if you want to adapt a particular drive shaft to another transmission or differential.

http://www2.dana.com/pdf/K350-1-DSSP.pdf

It takes a little head scratchin but it is all in there.

Re: Driveshaft time

This is where I got mine done. I think it was around $250 for them to shorten it, install a new 27 spline slip shaft, and all new U-joints.http://www.iedls.com/Driveshafts/Mea...riveshafts.asp
