Wheel Cyl question - 1978 K30 Dual wheel
Should the wheel cylinder rubber boot press against the metal "ear" that is coming off the bottom of the anchor post? The photo shows the old wheel cylinder - the new one does the same thing. This is on a 1978, Chev K30, dual wheel truck.
This brake job was started last year and then life got in the way and I had to stop working on it - now back to working on it. One thing I have learned: Memories of something you took apart 13 months ago are fuzzy - I will be asking a lot of questions. The original thread about brake drum removal is here. I'll check on my '97, but I don't think it looks the same at all. I've never seen one that had a boot press against anything.
I learned that with CRS (Can't Remember S*^!t) and CRAFT (Can't Remember a Friggin' Thing), I'm better off disassembling one side at a time and only then on the same day I plan to rebuild 'em. Last edited by BigBlocksRule; 05-01-2011 at 09:21 AM. |

I'm actually headed out right now to rebuild mine, I've had the drums turned and picked up new AC Delco shoes for it. Hoping to get this rearend put back together and slung up under my truck in the next couple of days.

Yes and nope: It is a dually and that is the wheel cylinder that was in the truck, but the PO did some swapping and jerry rigged a few things. The rear end under the truck is not the rear end that came with it. Found that out when none of the brake job parts fit I am sure it fits the opening in the backing perfectly. But at this point that is where "sure" ends.

You're missing the "T" shaped plunger that goes in the hole at the end of the dust cover in your pic. There's one on each end, they fit into a notch at the top of each brake shoe. I took a couple of pics today when I did mine, will get 'em posted as soon as I can.

The dust covers on mine aren't nearly as bulged as yours. I'll check mine to see how close the are to those metal ears.

IIRC, the guy at O'Reilley's yesterday said the cylinders for the dually are shorter than those for the SRW, that may be the problem. I'll measure mine today, cylinder only, no dust boot.

The dust boots on mine don't touch that bracket. The cylinders measure 2.8" long without the dust boots. HTH.

If you have the SRW version, good news is that the correct ones are $17/pair at O'Reilley's.
You can tie a long string between the wrong ones and use 'em like the throwing whatchamacallits they use in Australia next time you see the idiot P.O.! |

Single Rear Wheel versus dually. They use different wheel cylinders.

Without the dust boots mine are 2-13/16 (2.8125) side to side. It has the number 13608 cast on the front of it. This matches the CarQuest wheel cylinder I picked up at our local auto parts, CQ# EW71119

Lets give this a try:
Notice that the e-brake and adjuster lock are on the same side. The diamond thingy goes behind both clips on the top pivot. I found that a loop of coathanger wrapped around a good size screwdriver for a handle works well for stretching the springs onto their connection points. That looks like pretty much what I have - I will head to the parts store tomorrow and ask about a dual wheel vs single wheel cylinder. Thanks for the help!
