Trans Cooler Location Ideas
I'm installing a B&M trans cooler with a fan on my 57n truck. Need some mounting location ideas. The normal areas in front of and behind the radiator are taken up with a pusher fan/shroud and overflow bottle.
Looking for ideas on where else to mount. Under bed? Under floor? How? thanks in advance... The cooler is the B&M Hi-Tek Automatic Transmission Cooling System 13-1/2"x9"x3-1/2" with 9-1/2" diameter fan and it will be 'stand alone' with nothing running to the radiator.

Personally, I would ditch the pusher fan. Even with the best shrouds, they arnt as effective as a puller fan. Thats why almost every OEM electric fan setup is a puller.
Swap the fan around to the engine side, run the overflow in some of the "dead" area next to the radiator in/around the fenders, and you'll have enough room infront of the radiator to run both a trans cooler, oil cooler and an AC condenser.. if you wanted. if thats really not an option, theres the under truck route.. but is this on-road only, or does it see offroad. if its lowered and on road only mount the cooler on a slight angle low, and use an air dam and side shroud to direct air through the cooler... if its offroad at all, or if the truck is near stock height, you'll just have to mount it higher and rely solely on the fan to do its job. in anycase, if its not up front i would run a trans temp gauge... you really need to keep an eye on transmission temps with an air only (no coolant cooler) setup. |

Thanks everyone. I think you are right Mr Dude. Sometimes, in order to go forward, you gotta go back. I was so bent on making this work that I overlooked the need to just trim the shroud so that I could run the (puller) fan and shroud on the engine side of the rad.
I'll trim the shroud this weekend and re-install. Now I'll have room for the trans cooler and future AC components. Thanks again to everyone for the advice/comments.

That's a pretty big cooler!
Option 1: Mount it under the bed leaving enough space between it and the bed to ensure good air flow. Also will require locating exhaust components in such a way such that it's heat doesn't affect the tranny cooler.Option 2: I used an electric fan on my two old Ford Hot Rods (Model A & Model T). On both of them I used a short water pump and no stock fan. That allowed me to move the electric fan to the motor side of the radiator (pull instead of push). If you did that then you could mount the cooler in front of the radiator. That would be a better location than under the truck, IMO. Plus you could then also use the radiator tranny cooler lines in addition to the external tranny cooler. More capacity is a good thing.Hope that helps. I put mine on the outside of the frame under the passenger step. I left room for a fan incase regular air flow doesn't work and plumbed in a tee for a temp gauge. My cooler came out of a vending machine, I ran it for 15 years in front of the radiator without any problems. Here are some pics.
