2008 5.3 swap
can anyone tell me what would be needed to swap in a 5.3 out of a 2008 tahoe in to my 85 k20 suburban. i have a lead on a motor and possibly the trans also (4l80) but no harness or computer. is this worth messing around with or should i just go for a 2006 and under engine? i have heard that the 07 and up engines are a different setup anyone here done this swap yet? if so can someone point me towards some links or info. thanks

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
Harness, computer, TAC module and pedal, possibly a new or shortened driveshaft, fuel pump. You tend to run into incidentals as well, depending on what configuration of parts your using.

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
Pretty much what he said, but 2007-up NBS trucks don't have a TAC module. Do some searches there's a ton of info out there. Also try the conversions and hybrids section of Ls1tech.com.

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
I have a 2008 5.3L in my 67. These guys are right, but note that this year has 2 separate computers for the engine and trans. Check out my build thread in my sig and feel free to ask questions.

Not to mention, the Gen IV uses a 58x reluctor, where as the older Gen III uses a 24x reluctor. The newer PCM won't work with the 24x, and the 58x PCM won't have IAC drivers in it to run the idle air control valve. If this is your first swap, I would strongly urge you to get a complete set up, motor and trans so you don't run into unforseen problems trying ti mix match incompatable parts. Just my $.02 |

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
Ok another question. Is there anyway to use a non electronic trans with the dbw intake ? I think I know the answer to this one.

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
I dont think you can. usually if you can score a decent price on a motor it isnt that much to pick up the trans too. If it were me, I would buy the set, motor and trans. Sell your 700.

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
You'd have to change to dbc. The adapter bracket for the TV cable won't work for the dbw engine.

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
If I did decide to go with a 4l60e or 80 what would be involved to mate it to my transfer case and how much extra would those parts cost me ? Is this an easy process ? The couple threads that I have read so far involved guys using 2 wheel drive truck, any links on a build thread using a 4x4 truck

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
i have no experience with 4x4 swaps either.
But it would be damn cool! I agree as well, buy a complete 4x4 engine, trans, harness assy..... should not be too difficult then. If all else fails, nothing wrong with a genIII with dbc and stand alone harness! |

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
Wow read a thread on how to adapt a 4l60e to the transfer case and man is it involved. You basically have to rebuild the trans so that you can change the shaft, far mire work and money than I wantto put into it so it looks like it's deff going to be a Gen 3 and dbc mated up to my 700 for me. Thanks guys for all your input, looks like I know which way I'm headed so now it's time to start tracking down parts. One more question for u guys, can I put the dbc throttle body on any year Gen 3 block and do I also need the intake? I do know that I need the right computer for it but what other parts do I need to make the swap. I'm asking because the motor I'm likely getting is dbw

Re: 2008 5.3 swap
I haven't done it yet, but am amassing parts to swap a 5.3l into my '87 V10 4x4. I was told by several different folks that the only 'quick & easy' way to adapt the setup into an older truck was to use an NP241 out of a '90-'91 Suburban or Blazer. The 241 is supposed to bolt up but I'm getting conflicting info on whether or not you need an adapter to make it work. The 241 has the electronic speed sensor in it, which you need if you're going to use an electric cluster out of '90-'91 Suburban or Blazer.
All of this is based on using a 4l60e since that is what I'm planning. I have no idea what you would need to do to adapt it to a 4l80e. |
