oil pan question
so will the stock oil pan on a fbody ls1 work on a 72 2wd? I have searched and read many post on this and Im still a little confused.

stock truck pan will work just fine, is it lowered and if so, how much?

its stock in the front and lowered 2 inches in the back, I just didnt want to buy a new pan if i didnt need it

if you plan on lowering it, like a 4/6 eventually or even lower, then yes it would be a good idea to do it now. If your not going to do that, no way no how etc.etc, then a truck pan will be fine, my truck pan sits about 1" below the cross member.

Clyde, he's referencing the F-body pan if I read it right.
F-Body is 5 1/2" deep and the truck is 8 1/2" deep. He should be fine with the depth on the fbody pan as long as the shape clears the crossmember. I have the LH8 pan, and its about 3/4 LOWER than the skid plate/xmember. I'm lowered 4/6 (maybe a bit more) and its fine, but a bit nerve racking on speedbumps or big dips.

Yea Br3, I figured that but I was just currious if he was planning on lowering it more, if not, then why buy the fbody pan? stick with the truck pan and he is still good to go.
If he plans on lowering it alot, then the fbody or the LH8 pan would be the option.

If I'm reading this right, his sig says 'ls1 coming soon' so I would assume he's getting an ls1 out of an F-body. I think that pan might be hard to use in a truck because the sump part of the pan extends too far forward. You would either have to move the engine back further or maybe try to raise it up to clear the crossmember. The Hummer pan or truck pan would be easier to use, although they do hang about an inch below the crossmember. But even if the pan is higher than the crossmember, it's still not completely safe from every road hazzard, my Nova the pan is higher than the crossmember, and I have a broken oil pan to prove it.

I have a complete ls1 out of a 00 formula, I was wondering if the stock pan that is already on the engine would work, or if I needed to buy the lh8 pan. I havent started the swap yet, so i was trying to see if i need to change the oil pan or if the stock one would work. I have no plans of lowering the truck. Another reason I was asking is that I have a guy that is wanting to buy the fbody pan if I take it off. I appreciate everyones help. Sounds like I would be better off to go ahead and put the Lh8 on it.

I would go ahead and sell the F-body pan, they will bring between$ 150 and$ 200.. and a truck pan can be picked up for about$ 50. It would save you some on your swap, and most likley be easier.

Get the swap pan/lh8 pan. The truck pan works, but the larger size makes fitment a little tighter. If your putting the engine and trans in together, the extra clearance on the front of the pan is a godsend when maneuvering around the core support.

My pan is the stock LY6 pan and fits good other then hanging down below the crossmember a bit...as do the headers

It all depends on the motor mounts you use. If you go with ECE mounts, the Fbody will not work. You'll need to use the CTsV pan or the H8 pan. If you go with Street and performance or CPP style mounts the Fbody pan should work with no problem.

I have the truck pan and mine is lowered 3/4 with springs.
check out paceperformance swap kit, i think its the Hummer pan but everything is like $150.

ya, its the hummer H3/LH8 pan with the pickup tube and windage tray etc. Not bad for the price.

plan on getting a different pan for mine when I get the new DT big tube headers....then everything will be within the frame rails, with nothing hanging down
