Truck prices?
What's going on with truck prices. I've seen some nice 81-87 swb trucks going for a lot less than they did 6 months ago. I guess it's gas prices or something..

Re: Truck prices?
In the southwest the prices are still high for an old vehicle. If you need a pickup and don't want to spend $20-$30K for a new one, then the rust free old ones in good shape will always fetch a good price. A lot of people want to have a pickup as a second vehicle for the times when they need one. A reliable pickup for $3-$5 K is not a bad long term investment. New pickups only get slightly better gas mileage, if any better gas mileage. In the rust belt it is a different story.

Re: Truck prices?
I'd say the price of gas for sure(seen $1.40 a litre, but lower right now)
I drove a new one and it still sucks gas can't sell the new ones can't find old ones and no one is looking for parts(why put metal back when it's getting lighter)

Re: Truck prices?
I thought this thread was about prices increasing at first.
I keep waiting for mine to grow into what I paid for it |

Re: Truck prices?
I built one to sell but it looks like I need to hang onto it for a while. I looked through craigslist and I was shocked at how low they were. Looks like I need to build gas savers for a while. Maybe I'll make a dollar..

Re: Truck prices?
Yeah, I wouldn't get too discouraged. I've looked at a lot of those low-priced trucks in person, and they're usually rusted beat-up junk that would cost way more to build than if a person went ahead and paid for a good example.
I do agree that gas prices might be driving prices down a little bit, but that can always turn around too. I Remember when it almost hit 5-bucks a gallon in CA. and then a year later it was under 2-bucks. Hung at 3 a year, or so and then the big screwing just came. Gas prices are starting to drop again here, it's $3.99. In the meantime I'm just driving my little S-10 and working on the fullsize trucks. I don't care what gas prices might be, come the weekend I gotta drive a V8. Enjoy it now, May 21 the world is going to end... Uh, maybe I calculated the date wrong. I'll get back to you guys. |

Re: Truck prices?
I haven't been shocked by how low a price squarebodies have been for about 6 or 7 years. I think even now they are insanely priced. $400 trucks around here are selling for $1500-$1800 and $5k trucks are for sale for like $12k.
I'm shocked how insanely high they are around here, seeing as they're still common as dirt. |

Re: Truck prices?
Advertise it in the rust regions. If its rust free it will bring a premium.

Re: Truck prices?
If that truck is half as clean as it looks, you have a good score. Very nice 4wd,,,

Re: Truck prices?
You should man, they're crazy.
I went to go look at a rusty old truck that looked like it had been in every snow storm in michigan, 2wd everything was two-tone rust. he wanted $1800 for it. Then in winder theres a red 86 shorty that is beatup, looks like it was painted with a roller inside and out and has 3 different tires on it, but it has new looking bucket seats and valve covers and that guy wanted $5700 for it. |

I couldn't agree more with Chevyrado. The stuff for sale on CL is just stupid-high. I suspect that folks are watching too much Barret Jackson or Mecum. Some of these trucks come without beds, engines, transmissions, glass or doors and the sellers still want 2 or 3 thousand. I live near Tampa, FL and the cheapest 78-83 Chevy pickup on Craigslist is $2000. What the hell is happening??? |

Re: Truck prices?
I think I might just hang onto it and finish the interior and try to get my money out of it later on. I'm just ready to start my 70 short step build. After that I was wanting to do a 67 short build, step or fleet side..

Re: Truck prices?
There are great deals out there. I bought this 85 c10 350/th350 truck last week for 2k. It needs paint but there is NO rust ever. Only one repaint ever.

Re: Truck prices?
Maybe another reason is the export. In Europe a reasonable crew cab is 10k easy, a good one does 20k. This is due to the fact that these older cars pay less road taxes than new ones.
This guy sells cars for a very average price, nice to compare: http://www.rdclassics.nl For example: Running a new Silverado on LPG will cost me 2316 Euro in road taxes and 1400 Euro insurance per year. Running a pre 1986 Silverado Crew will cost me 0 euro in road taxes and 110 euro insurance per year. There is a busines case for restoring a pre 1986 car to modern specs. |
