GMC V6 A/C compressor

Has anyone updated the A/C compressor on their V6 using the old brackets? The York compressor I was told takes about 60hp to run and has to use R12 (not too easy nor cheap in California). I have to rebuild this one anyway so I was looking into updating to a new comressor but I'm worried about it fitting on my brackets. The newer compressors seem to be longer than the old York

Re: GMC V6 A/C compressor

I have used R134a in older R-12 compressors with no issues. Not one that old. R-12 may not be easy to find either.

Re: GMC V6 A/C compressor

IMO, buy a aftermarket R134a condenser, then run R134a. R134a can give high head pressure which melts compressors like the York/Tecumseh-a parallel flow R134a condeser will help tremendously. I got mine from Old Air in Ft Worth.

if you have extra cash, a Sanden or Sanyo type compressor takes much less power-but a 60hp loss is kinda high IMO

Re: GMC V6 A/C compressor

They made it illegal in CA, but I may be able to convert ro 134a. the poor motor only puts out 160hp and to use 60 for A/C seems to be a strain. Way back when I had my 63 I took it to a A/C shop and the guy said I would make the little motor unhappy if I put a/c on it. But this has had it for 50 years with a 1000lb camper on it so he couldn't be that right.

Re: GMC V6 A/C compressor

i was lookin online for compressors but don't know if it will fit. Since I have to rebuild the one I have I though it might be better if I updated. Though I would like to keep the truck as OEM as possable. If this will fit then I think the cost would be about the same as rebuilding the one I have. The A/C shop in town quoted me 1800 bucks!!! to upgrade using my frigette head unit. I decided that I would do it my self. 260 for a compresor and bracket is a lot cheaper. I can make the lines and install everything myself.

Re: GMC V6 A/C compressor

I don't know for sure what the actual Hp is but that's what the guy who was trying to sell me 1800 worth of A/C work was claiming

Re: GMC V6 A/C compressor

My 97 truck has a compressor that bolts on with 4 bolts straight down it is worth a try .. it is a delphi compressor, should be an easy mount to what you have .....

Re: GMC V6 A/C compressor

Thanks, and will do. I received a reply from Nostalgicairparts.com and they are looking into what compressor will work. I'll also look into if I can get a rebuild kit. If I can get the parts I should be able to rebuild it myself. And, the R134a condensors aren't too expensive (about 90 bucks) so I might be able to run "off the shelf" freon.
