Re: 5 Speed Question
I'd say that if you use it as a truck you would want the nv3500 or 4500 in it. If it was going to be used more like a car and just driven to shows and cruised and not be expected to haul or tow anything the t-5 would probably work great.

Re: 5 Speed Question
if budget minded - I'd recommend S10 T5 (unless you have buckets - in which case recommend an F-body World Class T5 (note S10 T5's were not World Class - but the shifter location is full fwd and clears a bench seat nicely) - another option is a World Class T5 with an S10 tailshaft installed on it. But now that this great idea has run in a few magazines, every junkyard owner suddenly wants an arm and a leg for an S10 tailshaft. I actually found one place that was charging more for a tailshaft than a whole trans. Crazy....
If your budget allows, I recommend a Tremec, or even the new Keisler RS 5-speed (TKO based trans, smaller tailshaft outer dimensions (less tunnel impact) and supposedly smoother shifting - can't vouch for that, but it is the trans I am considering, if the sales staff would ever call me back....) (C'mon guys, I'm trying very hard to give you my money!!). The RS is available in 400/500/600 ft-lb torque ratings. Good luck! Last edited by jocko; 06-13-2011 at 11:24 PM. |

Re: 5 Speed Question
You will be very satisified with your decision the first time you get the truck above 55 MPH and are able to shift again!!!
The overdrive is great. You may have to turn the gear shift cover 180* to give you more clearence for your bench seat, this is a un bolt turn around and bolt back up!

Re: 5 Speed Question
i know it's partly sales pitch from Keisler (and that's ok), but those guys kinda bad-mouthed TKO's shifting hiccups when I told them I was interested in their RS400 5-speed (which I still am) as a means to swing me further onto their side of the fence. But has anyone else ever heard about unreliable shifting or any shifter problems on TKOs?? I have not other than that comment from Keisler tech - and I don't know what problems they were referring to specifically - the guy just told me to google it (which I haven't yet, you all are my truck google - Troogle...., hmmm). I kinda chalked it up to a sales pitch - and ANYthing would be an improvement over my non-synchro 3 on the tree anyway....
Here's why I'm asking - I'm chasing my tail dealing with Keisler it seems, apparently asking a question because they gave me an estimate for something I did not ask for is too much trouble - so I may go back to Classic Chev 5-speed or someone else. Vendor comms and reliability is kinda important with me. Not too late to win my order though! (I only say that if you're reading this Keisler - but you're RAPIDLY losing my inteterst - a returned email, phone call, or a kiss my a@# would be sufficient, silence is not ) Last edited by jocko; 06-16-2011 at 12:13 AM. |

Re: 5 Speed Question
I have an nv3500 behind my 355 sbc with 3.42 gears. It's not bad but definitely more torque than speed. Don't get me wrong it is fast but 1 2 are lower than I like. I cruise at 2k goin 65mph. So that is prolly about average.
I can take a steep bendy hill in 4th gear no problem, so it likes hills a lot, I have take others in 5th as well. I would like to try an s-10 t-5 or similar on a future build. But I don't want anything with the concentric throwout bearing, I don't like the fact of dropping the trans to replace that. If I get a lift, then I might think otherwise. It seem to me, atleast in PA that the nv3500 are a little harder to find.

The only shifting difference I have noticed is I can NOT speed shift the TKO like I do in the Corvettes, but I have outgrown a lot of that anyway!! The TKO shifts like butter but the throw is again not like the Vettes but it is a TRUCK !!

Re: 5 Speed Question
You've pretty much seen what Keisler has to offer. No call, no email, no nothing. And you'll get even less once they have your money in their hands. Deal with them, get used to it.
