This Is Why You Check The Tank Out
-
I decided to remove the tank from the '68 I just bought and flush it out before putting fresh gas in it. Glad I did.... ![]() If you buy a truck that has been sitting for quite a while you really need to check the inside of the fuel tank before trying to start it. The tank I took out has about 10 pounds of junk in it. When you tip the tank from end to end all of the stuff inside goes "Thud" to the other end.... This is the worst I have ever seen. Luckily, I had a good tank to put in it. LockDoc

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out

I cut a hole in the end of the tank this morning with the torch (Disclamer: don't try this unless you REALLY, REALLY know what you are doing!!) and dumped the "stuff" out of it. The large chunks are a tar like substance and about 1" to 1 1/2" thick Some of the tarry stuff was stuck and I couldn't get it to come out. LockDoc

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that! Use to be able to tell just by looking at the inside of the oil fill cap.

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out
I just replaced my tank and sending unit 'cuz mine looked exactly like that. Worst smelling fuel I've ever smelled. Not too mention all the rust and other particulate that came out. It was so bad the junk actually plugged up my funnel when I was dumping it out into gas cans to take to the dump.

I think I am going to cut the tank open to see what's inside. My curiosity is getting the best of me. LockDoc

Nope, I just flush 'em and blow 'em out with high pressure air.

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out
As I was looking at the pictures, all I kept thinking about was what would have happened if you had just poured some fresh gas in the tank and tried to run it as is? Good thing you have the common sense to check it first. I also would be interested in seeing the inside of the tank when you open it up. I'm curious about the part that went "clunck." LOL
![]() Anyways good luck and your new ride looks to be a pretty sweet one. I wonder how long it had been setting before you got it. Have you figured out a reason the previous owner gave up on it? Keith |

Here's what the gas looked like from my wrecker when I got it. It was "oompa loompa" orange!
![]() Truck was off the road for 25 years so it's probably about that old. NO ethanol in this stuff! ![]()

"Matt, why don't you drain the gas tank on that thing?" "HUH"? I didn't know that older cars like that had drain plugs on the tank. So I get the behemoth on a hoist and wheel over the oil drain catch pan and proceeded to open that drain plug. Now I've dealt with some pretty nasty stuff in my time. I've worked in a butcher shop, gut deer every fall, handle maggot infested fish that wash up on shore, stuff that would make alot of people gag - and never have been bothered by it. ONE DROP of that old gas splashed up and landed on my lip - I thought I was going to have to miss the rest of my shift. That stuff is NASTY!
