1949 3100 Frame Paint

Hello guys, I recently picked up a 1949 chevy 3100 and plan to paint the frame. Could someone reccomend a primer and paint to use for completing this project?

Thanks

Pat

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I'm using it. Their "Hammered" appearing black actually looks like powder coating. I wouldn't have beleved it myself but when I had my '46 I met a guy building a beauty and I asked him who had powder coated his frame? He kinda laughed and told me what he'd done.

Sure, its NOT as durable as even gun applied paint but I'm building a driver and touch up will always be an easy job.

I think it would be too thick to get into all the nooks and crannys. But maybe after it were painted. That doesn't make sense though!

Hmmm. Never thought to read it. I HAVE used it and it didn't cause anything. Good to know though. Saves me the cost of more primer, thanks!

Re: 1949 3100 Frame Paint

ive used rustoleum paint. Try thier new "enamel" paint, that stuff is really nice. Spray can at walmart. Ive used the white can its not near as durable or as shiney as the enamel. Enamel comes in a silver can.

Got rustoleum hammered finish just to see how it looked. Surprised! Nice finish and actually looks good. Might be going that way.

Re: 1949 3100 Frame Paint

To start the frame restoration I pulled off the spare tire holder assembly and trailer ball bracket from under the bed/frame. I think the spare tire is the original. I got them down to bare metal then cleaned the steel. I then primed with Krylon primer and plan to paint with flat black Krylon. Maybe I try the hammered to see what looks better? THanks fro all the good advise.

Re: 1949 3100 Frame Paint

don't use krylon paint over rustolem the solvents react causing a mess.
krylon is lacquer based and rustolem is enamel no mater what the can says.

Re: 1949 3100 Frame Paint

Here is a picture of gray hammertone. This is not my part but one I copied from google images.

It looks good and covers minor imperfections. Dont know how it scratches yet. Waiting for a week to go by until I try.
