i don't think so; The cap may be interchangeable, but that's about it.

Small-body HEI's ARE available as a conversion to a stock later model points V6 distributor with the window in the cap.

They're not the same, but if you want HEI for a straight 6 they can be found on eBay or on straight sixes from the late 70s/early 80s. I bought the HEI for my nova's 250 on eBay and was impressed at the price and quality of it.

The issue is, between the inline early/late 6's and the GMC V6's, they do not interchange into the engines the same, different posts and gears. As far as being phased correctly for the V6, yes they are an even fire setup, 120 degrees between firing pulses, and work, but, if it don't fit the engine, and don't drive the oil pump..it don't work!

As I said, there is a conversion, not a "drop in" system, that adds real HEI to the later V6 points distributors by completely reworking them. This is NOT a large cap HEI grafted onto the point body and gear, this is a completely redone, remote mounted coil HEI, looks close to stock because it uses the stock points distributor, works better than the coil in cap HEI's.

Can't you just change a v-8 distributor to a v-6 by changing the cap and star wheel and reluctor wheel?

By time you disassemble the two and swap out the parts, you could have bought a replacement and dropped it in. It's not like any of these are rare. To get the parts for the V6, you'd already have to be in posession of a complete unit, other than the housing, which rarely goes bad (might need bushings... cheap).
People do modify early L6 and V-6 (305) distributors to HEI's but only because there is no factory HEI's to be had. For any late model V-6/L-6/V-8, HEI's are plentiful and therefore cheap.

PerTronix IS NOT AN HEI, nowhere near it. They are a TCBI (transistor controlled breaker-less inductive). They make the same output voltage as a brand new set of points makes, the first spark out of them, and doesn't degrade from pitting and wear on the points face, but, they do not make anywhere near HEI voltage levels, NO MATTER THE COIL USED , NO MATTER THE INPUT VOLTAGE, RESISTED OR NOT, THEY DON'T MAKE ANYWHERE NEAR HEI SPARK OUTPUT LEVELS, PERIOD.

The advertising hype that replacement drop-in systems like PerTronix have received, has sure changed the truth about their spark output levels. This over hype advertising sure does sell a lot of junker ignition systems, though. Too bad, it gives a REAL HEI a really bad name from it all.

That IS the truth of it.

Anyone want a free PerTronix, I have about 2,000 of them out in 5 - 55 gallon barrels, all dead as a door nail, you can pick the one you want to be completely and totally frustrated with, and not have to pay for it.

`ok then why does the Pertronix conversion (flying magnet), with an Accel supercoil run better than the HEI,s did in my ole 383? after 20000 miles why does it still run if it is infact "junk"?& why does it rev to 7200& dont skip a beat? crazyL

You are lucky, the rest of them don't run that well. And, if that HEI had a stock epoxy in cap coil, I'd expect a match lit at the spark plug hole worked better than it did.

OOps, I forgot....I did lite the match on all 8 holes, no need for them stinkin spark plugs(stuffed the kid under the hood)....it sort of freaked him out tho crazyL

So to answer the original question, no, the L-6 and V-6 4.3 distributors are different.
Both are readily available in yards, rebuilt or new off evilflay.
There are a couple of different HEI's available for the L-6, coil in cap, big cap remote coil, etc. There are 2 different shaft set ups, and since this drives the oil pump, be sure you get a complete package. They take different pick oup coils too. Either one will do just fine.
Pertronix works great on old tractors. For all others just get an HEI.
