Wiring issue

OK it starts off i let my ol lady drive my truck, it was right after a big snow storm. She was with her friend, took a stop light a little fast hit some sand and the tail slide out and she slit and hit a snow embankment broke the steering column in the truck it turns to the left fine, but it has like 5in of play to the right. That's not the problem. The problem is when she hit that embankment the battery cam off the tray and hit the fan and baaam! battery acid everywhere! ruined all the chrome bla bla bla. Well about 2 months later I'm having issues with the wiring the running lights wont go off, as soon as i turn the truck on the windshield wipers come on and wont go off, door locks lock and unlock themselves. and i just want to know is it hard to just rewire everything or what? not exactly sure how to attack this on? thanks for your time and future help.

I would change all of the under hood wire harness, its not complicated or expensive. I would also change the column harness or the whole column with a used one, thats where all your real issues are with the lights/wipers.

If you have battery acid eating through multiple places on your wiring you could be chasing shorts and open wires for ever. You could get a new harness and get rid of all the problems at once. That's what I'd do if that is indeed the problem.

well when i was messing with it i had an electrical burning smell coming frome the cab but didnt find any burnt wires or anything. nothing under the hood is burnt to the wires. but there is a short somewhere but not sure where it could be. and i planned on changing the whole column.

Most likely when your wife broke the steering column the wires that run to the blinker/dimmer/ignition switch got damaged.

thats what i was guessing.cuz it ran fine for a while then the ghost appeared. i call the wiring problem a ghost. cuz it stopped for like 2 or 3 days then all started up again. so im just gonna replace the column then go from there.

LOL I call them Gremlins bacause they are far more destructive than ghosts.

I think it's half price weekend at LKQ Pull a Part. Last time I was there I saw a few squares. Probably get a column and harness pretty cheap. I can't imagine the column being broke. Have you checked the front end?

yea the snow storm was awhile ago havent had time nor money to put in the truck. now i have a little time and some money to start this whole restoration "rwhit57"

yea i have you can turn the steering wheel and look under the hood and the shaft never moves til the gears or whatever is in the column catches. ive checked it all. the alignment was off but i fixed that now she drives strait as an arrow. I completely forgot all about lkq! thanks for reminding me.

Thanks, I bought it already painted, I did wheels/drop/exterior detail/currently working on interior.

"84-86", (87 c10/ 87-91 burb and crew are TBI motors and not sure about compatability on the wiring on those)

i dont have the tbi motor. i have a carbed motor. i think it did have the tbi in t befor but not exactly sure. cuz there are alot of extra connector all over

Got the ol girl fixed. An 82 steering column works in an 86 chevy silverado. But you have to figure out something for brights and wipers. Cuz the brights are on the floor of the 82s and older so I gotta figure out where to put my bright button and my wipers.

buy a 500doller doner truck. ur truck is no longer safe. if that steering snaps and causes a roll over ur gonna feel really bad. someone could die. replace everything damaged. new steering new collom and whatnot

Thats the only problem. Its been driven for like 4 months broke now everything is fine everythinh is still tight. So its all good bro.

I'd find a setup from an 81-83 truck for the wipers and such, and 73-83 for the high beams. Mount the floor switch like in the older ones, and drill the holes in the dash/get the older style bezel for the wiper switch.

Yea i got the high beam switch hooked up just goyta make a hole to make a button. And i gotta figure out where to put the wiper switch.

Ever think about getting a bezel out of an older model truck that had a wiper switch and just hooking it up like the factory did? Or do you still need your delay setup? I know there's a factory delay setup for the dash you could do, I'm not sure if it's a direct swap though.

No because the dash under the bezel theactual metal part of the dash is completely different. Or that would already be done.

Ok now im having a problem with something in my truck is draining my battery. And i have nothing in my truck electronic wise so idk where to start?! Im gettin frustrated now over all this bs
