Black wood beds!!!! UPDATED with pics

I did a search and found some beds with some stained and painted wood done in black. I remember seeing a red truck with some black wood and red strips (might have been the 67-72 section). Looked sweet.
Anyone have some pics they can share of the bed wood done in black?

I did a couple samples over some test red wood, and they came out 'all right'. One piece I put to much black on I think.

Thanks in advance

These beds were painted. The lamp black and linseed oil is from the "olden days". Linseed oil itself is known to absorb water and should not be considered a sealer. I did a beautiful bed in mahogany years ago and was constantly "feeding" the finish with linseed oil. The upside is it never peels. The downside is it gets dirty/gummy after awhile and never really seals the wood.
Below is a pic of an original factory PAINTED bed.

The current International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) evaluation is that, "Carbon black is possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B)". Short-term exposure to high concentrations of carbon black dust may produce discomfort to the upper respiratory tract, through mechanical irritation.

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Here's a few more pics of the wood floor for the '65 I restored. Used Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Primer and their Exterior Low Gloss Black Enamel/Latex paint. Thinned it with Floetrol so it would lay out better, and sprayed it with my Sata KLC RP primer gun (2.5 tip).

Primed, grain raised up, needed lots of sanding. Brushed the primer on for the first coat.

Sanded with 80 grit on a 6" DA sander.

Reprimed but sprayed it this time, lightly sanded with 180 grit on the DA, just enough to remove the orange peel from the primer, not smoothing any of the wood's grain though.

Painted, two coats of Ben Moore's Low Gloss Exterior Latex/Enamel thinned with Floetrol.

Here's a pic from an assembly line showing the painted wood floor, with a little gloss showing

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Very Nice Job! I'm doing mine out of "Bloodwood", natural finish, probably apply about 8 coats of hand-rubbed Tung Oil for a light sheen, then install stainless bed strips and bolt kit. I'll post pics when done.

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that spray furninture polish (I used the lemon scented Walmart brand stuff in the yellow can ) works great to keep the bed floor looking like new. Darkens it up and adds a little more sheen, great for a quick detail before a car show. Works good on the satin interior paint as well.

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Thanks for all the replies.
Looks like me and theastronaut were doing test panels at the same time!!! I came up with about the same results. After the second coat, I did about 2-3 more coats and got it black, but I think it was 'too black'.

Sounds like we are looking for about the same effect. black, but able to see the grain. not gloss, but a nice satin look.
I do like the 'dye' idea though. may have to check that out.
I also wouldn't mind getting that 'candy' black look (still see the grain) and clearcoat with automotive clear with a flattening agent in it (as I did on my black areas on the truck). Clearcoat, resand and reclear so it's flat, but yet you can still see the grain through the black/clear.

I read your build thread theastronaut, got lot's going on. Sounds like "Ron" know his stuff about stains, dye's wood.... (has some nice stuff).

I should have mentioned I went with Oak. It's on the way from Mar-K. I'm going with the hidden bolt strips and painting them the same olive green as the truck.

Nice scans aerotruk63

Looking forward to seeing your pics brokenspoke

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Great minds think alike! I'm going to try dying the wood (and sanding it better!) next and see how that works out. Might get to try it tomorrow night, but if not definitly sometime this week. I'll post the results here. Great looking truck Taz!!

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

I was told on another forum that they had a heavy kraft paper on top of the wood for protection during shipping and that it was under the bed side rub rails and inner fenders. When you remove the wood along these area's that you should find remenants of that paper. The factory photo contradicts this information.
Additionally that the finish was applied after the floor was assembled and that the finish was not found under the rub rails. More unanswered questions.

Looks like the cowl extensions are missing in the factory photo.

theastronaut may I ask what year that factory photo's from? Do you have the original or found it on line?

The pic is from 62-63 judging from the hood and wrap-around windshield. I believe the wood strips and planks on the '65 I restored were painted assembled, but that could have been done at a later date.

thanks aero - ironically, since I'm not a big fan of them, I've since removed them. And they left some "nice" screw holes in the bed... Middle ones will be pretty simple to fill, but the ones near the stake pockets won't be easy to get behind for brass backing while welding, etc. May have to chop up my brass backing to be able to get in there. But that's for another day.

I do plan on listing the rails for sale in the near future, either here or on ebay or something like that.

They are nice, and they are older stuff, so they looked appropriate on the truck, but I just wasn't a fan. Personal preference, that's all. I DO like these same rails with the shorter stantions that came with some of em, mine are pretty tall.
