4spd linkage
I might be picking up a 65 shortbed and will be dropping my 350/4spd into it. I know some of the early trucks had hydraulic clutch linkage but what about the 65`s? Is there a conversion kit available or will I have to piece it together?

Re: 4spd linkage
Hydraulic clutch, yes 60-61 or 2, 63's definitely mechanical
hydraulic linkage,no 4 speed no linkage, shifter comes right out of the gearbox. sounds like you'll have to piece it together T

Re: 4spd linkage
Do you want hydraulic linkage, or do you prefer the original mechanical setup?

I don`t know honestly. My el camino had mechanical and im ok with it. I guess which ever one os easier to come up with. I still have to go look at the truck but Im just trying to do a little research on the 4spd stuff. I know the shifter that is for my el camino probably wont work but Im planning on using a late model bench so maybe it will? If not Ill have to get a different shifter.

Re: 4spd linkage
Mechanical linkage would probably be easier, since all the engineering is factory it would just be a matter of collecting and assembling. If you want to run long tube headers, the hydraulic system becomes more favorable. Captainfab sells a kit to convert to a hydraulic system which could probably be used on a 65:
http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=362375 Or you can fabricate your own like I did, shown in post #2: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...draulic+clutch Hurst finally offers a bolt on stick for the 55-57 bench seat application, so this might provide some flexibility in shifter selection: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HUU-5388620/?rtype=10 If using a bench seat just make sure to avoid the Hurst Street Super Shifter. If mounts the shifter head farther back and higher up and will not clear a bench seat no matter what stick is used. |

Re: 4spd linkage
What would be a good shifter to use on a Muncie M20 if the Super Shifter won't work?

Here are comparison photos showing the shifter location. The first is standard Hurst Competition Plus, the second is the same shifter mechanism with the Street Super Shifter mounting and straight rods: |

Re: 4spd linkage
Thanks. Ill have to consider that hydraulic set up. Looks like it will be the easiest choice. The shift I have is a comp plus but it doesn`t have the typical 2 bolt mount set up so I can`t just change sticks. I would just have to sell mine and buy another one.

Re: 4spd linkage
I might be missin somethin.....but my '63 GMC's both have hydraulic clutches as original equipment.
I wouldn't be surprised if that was unique to the GMC side.

Re: 4spd linkage
Yes the GMC's had the hydraulic clutch from '60-'63 whereas the Chevy's had the hydrauilc clutch from '60-'62.
To the OP. That '65 would have had a mechanical clutch originally, which would make it easy to stay with that type. However, depending on what you want to run for headers or exhaust manifolds, converting to a hydraulic clutch may be easiest. Headers that will work in these trucks with the mechanical clutch linkage, are limited to long tubes.
