Alternator wiring

Which ones of these wires is supposed to hook up to the battery? And it hooks up to the negative side correct?

Re: Alternator wiring

I know they both go on the alternator but which one goes to the battery? Like the other end. my battery isn't being charged, alternator checked out fine. Realized, I have my one red power cable going to the starter, and only one ground going to the frame.

Re: Alternator wiring

The red one going back to the starter puts the charge back to your battery through your positive lead going to the starter.

Re: Alternator wiring

So I should tie it into the power cable down at the starter? Or put a terminal on the end of it and just have it touching at the starter?

Re: Alternator wiring

That depends if your harness is messed with. Alternater wires go to the voltage reg, then feed to your starter and distributor.

Re: Alternator wiring

ahhhh....

It's most likely not there anymore. frame off restoration.

Is it a bad idea to just wire it without the regulator? or, can i pick up a regulator locally?

Re: Alternator wiring

depends on which alternater you have. those wires are for an external voltage regulater. you can get a later one wire alt with internal reg that only joins your poss cable at the batt or starter.

Re: Alternator wiring

Do you know if theres any modification I need to make? Should all just bolt up and work? I don't care if the gauges work or not.

Re: Alternator wiring

The alternaters are have the same mounts. If you go with the internal reg type alt, I would trace back your existing wires and remove to keep down the clutter and single wire the new one to battery or starter.
