Nasty squeeling noise - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I drove my truck around my back yard for the fist time in a couple of years, I encountered a problem when I put her into reverse in that I got a horrible metallic squeeling noise from underneath the cab. It seemed to match the engine revs. I have fitted a new high torque mini starter (proform) and I'm wondering if that might be the source, if not could it be down to the transmission (TH350) or something else. Help I have no idea where to start. She moved fine just this horrible loud noise. Brakes were crap but I think thats just because of lack of use, manual drums and new shoes on the back not bedded in. They will be gone through before she goes back on the road and converted to power drums with all new lines, and wheel cylinders and maybe even a new master.

The noise is worrying though as I don't want to screw something up. I don't need to drive her any distance, just out of my yard soon and onto a flatbed/trailer to move her to our new house.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Did you check your transmission fluid?

No, not checked atf level, I did wonder if that might be the problem. I'll have a look at the dipstick tomorrow, she does drip a little so may well be very low, I've got a gallon in the garage so can top it up if needs be. Will I have done any damage if it is low fluid? She literally was only in drive and reverse for a few minutes and only moved a hundred yards back and forth.

Doubtful but smell the fluid, if it smells burnt, you might want to think about dropping the fluid and changing it and put a new filter in.

Phil, if it's been sitting a while and you haven't paid any real attention to the tranny then I would definitely look into draining that old fluid and replacing with fresh, plus a new filter...Real Steel sells good quality ones. Was it squealing or whining noise? because a whining noise is usually associated with restricted flow of tranny fluid and that would coincide with the revs, this would indicate a blocked filter.
The starter would not be the issue once it disengages after starting thats it, if it were low on fluid it would not move.
Also have you checked the belts?....

Definitely wasn't belts, belts are fine and it was coming from under the cab which led me to think either starter or tranny, could be somethings just got hung up under there and is rubbing, theres no cover on the flywheel/flexplate at the moment as I need to reinstall it.

I will check the fluid level and before it goes back on the road change the fluid and filter. I need to get underneath with a light and check physically in case I have a cat stuck in there or something.

Yeah, I would think that would make a nasty squeeling noise!!

I don't have a clue about your issue. Hopefully it will be an easy fix like it is just low on trannsmission fluid.

I had a terrible squealing noise on mine at the bellhousing, turned out the spring the holds the starter gear in place had broken and the starter gear would fall down and hit the flywheel while it was running, then it acted like a pinball machine, the flywheel would throw the gear up and it would come back down, got that fixed and no more noise

Does it do it in reverse only? or also in drive.

Since you brought it up... that actually happened when I was a kid - and the murderer was our neighbor's brand spanking new orange 71 LWB. His daughter was searching for her lost kitten all morning, and then dad, um... found it when he started his truck. It had climbed up under the hood for a nap. What a nightmare. I didn't personally hear the squeal though, so I can't help you identify whether your noise is being caused by feline lubrication.

Feline lubrication! LMAO at that one! Seemed to only do it in reverse. It was a bit juddery tbh so it could well be low fluid although that could also just be down to it having stood outside through a couple of bad winters.

Experiment time!! Clear all the cats out and bolt a chain to the head on the drivers side of the motor and secure it to somewhere on the frame. A limiter sorta. If it still squeels you know it's inside motor or tranny making noise. If no noise then look for places you could have contact when the motor torques that way in reverse.

When asked why I work on old trucks, I tell them: Been married 27 years, sons are pretty much gone, don't like the wife anymore and don't have a girlfriend, so, gotta do something, the old trucks are cheaper and less drama than a girlfriend -
