Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
I hate shifting, especially in our trucks. Im glad I dont have to drive my truck in traffic. I would have to break down and put that automatic set up I got for it years ago ...

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
traffic cant be as bad as here in la. i love driving stick. getting behind the wheel of a automatic is sometimes relaxing but it all depends what you feel more comfortable with.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
I drove sticks for many years but now I'm old and I like automatics a lot better.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
I've driven both and prefer the automatic for ease of driving but like the response of the manual shift.
My 69 chevy (now in pieces) was converted to auto and was great for towing and driving but my 68 GMC is more fun with the 3 on the column. Plus it keeps my wife from driving it. Bottom line, if you like both, get one each. |

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
i think it has something to do with taking life easy after those long, hard years of movin' that silly clutch in and out over and over and over again (almost 40 yrs of nothing but sticks here). besides, fastwillie696969 in his usual succinctness got me thinkin about it.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
Only days I don't like my 4 speed T10 is when my back is out. However, my wife doesn't drive standard. That outweighs the negative I'll stay home when my back is out and my truck will stay out of my wife's hands.
Wait a minute.... if she can drive it, would the check book be any easier to pry from her hands??????

My 1993 Toyota Corolla beater is a 5-speed I drive daily in Dallas traffic and my 01 Dodge diesel that I use when I need a truck is a 5-speed too. I don't think twice about it.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
I won't buy a vehicle that isn't a stick or that I can't convert
That said, both my HHR and my truck have STIFF clutches, so traffic can be a little bit annoying. I find that as long as I don't sit with the clutch in for more than a few minutes (I spend a lot of time in neutral in traffic) it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I added up the miles Ive driven for my job a few years back and it was quite a bit over a million. Thats not long haul cross country stuff, its mostly city driving (copier/printer filed service tech). Western Washington isn't flat any where, and the traffic is right up there with the worst in the nation. Thats why I prefer an automatic.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
I guess it would depend on where you live. More traffic and stoplights etc. the auto might be better. But if tour in a rural area or drive mostly on the highway the 5-speed would be ok. It is a big decision with all the work it takes to change over, clutch pedal, hydrolic clutch, etc. etc. Having owned many stick tranny cars and trucks they do wear you out in traffic pretty quick. But i'm not saying i wouldn't own another one either. They are fun sometimes! Joseph

have most of parts bell housing, push rod pedal spring. Using old threes speed bell housing no hydrolic clutch have to find. a drive shaft.

Got a stick in both Trans ams, but my trucks will have autos (t-400s). Like the lazyness of the auto.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
I don't get tired doing much of anything, let alone shifting gears. I find myself more content with doing things the old fashioned way and maybe that's why I'm in such good shape with so little effort. I've heated with wood all my life and have yet to own a log splitter. I could go on but this thread is about shifting gears, right? All my kids started driving on manuals. My X-wife's first six vehicles with me were 4 or 5spds (hmmm...maybe that's why she left). Well, except the '63 Riviera that wasn't available with manual. My youngest is on his second vehicle, both 5spd. I've had so many manual vehicles it would take too long to list them all. I ordered my '92 K3500 with a 5spd and have been shifting that thing for just about 300,000 miles. My '67 GMC project is getting an M22. I can't wait to "drive" that thing. Pressing one pedal isn't driving in my book. Now,about my motorcycles...
I only stop once at a light. When bozos keep creeping up I stay put. One thing I like about manuals, you tend to not be one of the mindless drivers out there. You are more aware of your speed in town, parking lots, etc.because you know what gear you are in. You don't shift all the way up in a 25 mph zone, automatics do. With a manual you only go so long without having to put your mind to what you are doing, unless on the freeway. I just think, for the most part,a manual driver tends to be a more conscious driver.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?
Come to the land of 10,000 lakes and see how much you like that manual transmission. I went from manual to auto because a manual transmission at the boat lift sucks big time.
That stiff clutch also got real old real fast in bumper to bumper traffic on 35W during rush hour. If my truck was one of those girly, show only trucks I could see a manual again but for a truck that gets used the way the general intended it to, auto is the only way to go. One more thing... try plowing snow with a manual transmission.

It's all personal preference, really. I've owned both types and I'd rather have a stick. that said, I did swap my SM465 to NV4500. Really the only difference is the overdrive, otherwise it feels like the same box.

We also have rush hour traffic backups. Again,no problem here. I guess my legs are in shape because working a clutch never phases my leg and I don't consider it stiff. I use my trucks for work. Is that what you meant by "how the general intended"? Do these trucks look like girly show trucks? Notice the plow mounts. Their not for show, either:
