Re: Candy apple red
Candy apple red is translucent. What people call candy apple red could look completely different from car to car because of the base color the candy is sprayed over. The most popular base colors are usually bright metallic gold or silver because these color really make the candy coating "pop" . Add some layers of clear and your candy apple paint job looks a mile deep.

All Kandies are translucent and they all aren't called apple this or that Kandy Apple Red is just apple red. The old school way is to shoot the silver or gold base with original style candy. But, there is a way to do it without shooting gallons of Kandy with 4-6 coats of clear. You start by shooting a base color close to your Kandy color of choice then you mix up Intercoat clear [SG150 from HoK which is all I use for kandies] enough to cover with about 4 coats worth. Buy KK Kandies they are Kandy Koncentrates in which you can shoot way fewer coats than traditional Kandy. I then mix up enough regular clear to allow 1 light tack coat and 1 wet coat in which I also add the KK to. It brings out the the 4 coats of intercoat to look like a normal candy job. Then 4-6 coats regular clear. If it sounds like too much work HoK also sells Kandy Bases that simulate the candy without the involved work. Clear as usual 4-6 coats. |

Re: Candy apple red
I just got done doing a 57 Chevy candy copper cinnimon an it was two coats of base 4-5 midcoat then three clear. Candys are not for the first timer or even the mildly experienced painter because they are tough to get looking good..

Re: Candy apple red
Nice paint on that Burb!! I prefer silver as my base with some black flames and then the red. I've had 2 M/C's painted that way and I loved it. You could only see the flames in certain lights.
