Steering wheel swap
Hey does 88-93 smaller steering wheel swap onto a 1971 column? Was looking at finding one like the one on my 89 silverado. Any one do this? Have pics? Advise?

Re: Steering wheel swap
It should.
I swapped over to a 70 442 steering wheel I had in the stash, along with the metal hub and a GM bowtie horn button. Works fine. Much nicer to drive. That factory wheel is like driving a bus I've been bugging the aftermarket for years to produce a smaller diameter factory truck wheel. They do it for the tri-5's and vettes. I guess the trucks don't get any love. |

Re: Steering wheel swap
The one I have on there now is early 80's I think but is still pretty large. I like the look of early 90's better, smaller and much warmer on hands.

Re: Steering wheel swap
Easy swap. Since I have van tilts installed, the smaller wheel looks better with the shifter.

Re: Steering wheel swap
Mr. Jones,
I like the 4 spoke design more then the 3 spoke, so I think that wheel is perfect. I was looking for one for a while for my Chevelle, but they were cost prohibative.... My horn doesnt work after my late model wheel swap, but mine never did either. It has a short somewhere and when I turn the wheel, you hear the horn relays clicking. There for the horn is not hooked up. I planned on an aftermarket steering column anyway.... |

I don't remember what I paid, probably around $100 back then. Now that wheel NOS is more like $500 IF you can find it. They are reproduced now however and I think they are in the $2-$300 range as reproduction. I bought an NOS 3 spoke Walnut wheel for my 69 Z and had to sell my left arm for it So in retrospect those Olds 4 spoke wheels aren't priced too bad. |

Re: Steering wheel swap
I want to do this to my 68 GMC, Was it a pretty straight foward install? I am doing a 5.3 swap, and because it is a DBW, it can be hooked up for cruise control. Thinking I will find one with this style and integrate the cruise, blinker, bright light switch, and would shift the 4l60E better than the original 3 on the tree sutup. Did you swap over everything from the wheel to the rag joint, or just where it comes out of the firewall?
Thanks for the pics! |

I like the look of the 70 olds 442 steering wheel. This was the closest new steering wheel to buy looking like it that I could find. |

Re: Steering wheel swap
Here ya go Tples,
I run a 70 442 wheel on mine. I just swapped the olds horn button for the bowtie button. I actually like the 3 spoke version of this, but I had this one NOS laying around since the mid 80's and figured I'd use it. |

Re: Steering wheel swap
I tried to do this install with the 88-92 steering wheel and I couldn't get the steering wheel on. Its like the splines weren't sitting far enough up for the steering wheel to grab. Any ideas? 1971 GMC c2500 non tilt wheel.

Re: Steering wheel swap
Anyone have photos of their S-10 steering wheel with horn button off? I want to see how you connected the horn. I just picked up a 91 steering wheel and got it on the column, but only clipped horn cap on for now. still need to figure out the horn contact part.

Re: Steering wheel swap
I can't get the '91 steering wheel on all the way. The turn signal cancel cam protrudes out too much. Did anyone making this swap have to modify their cancel cam (white round thing that holds bearings down)? Also, did you have to modify your horn button bushing/spring to stay in steering wheel and still make contact with horn contact in column?
