Which Edelbrock 1403 or 1406

I have a full stock 1983 SWB SS with a 305. I am pulling the Qjet and going back with an Edelbrock. Which do you think would be better, the 1403 or 1406? Thanks.

Re: Which Edelbrock 1403 or 1406

the 1406 would be too much for your motor i would definitely use the 1403 on a 305. you can call edelbrock and talk to a tech thats what i did when searching for the right carb only took a couple of minutes

Actually I would disagree with the 1406 being too big fro the 305. THe 1406 carbs are advertised at 625 CFM, but they are really a strong 600 CFM and they are capable of being leaned out by changing jets and rods to make it do what you want. The 1406 is large enough to give you room to drive the truck hard and handle hills on the highway without running out of fuel, where the 1403 may do that for you.

Re: Which Edelbrock 1403 or 1406

Gas milage is much more important than pulling power. It is flat here in DFW, I dont plan on pulling hills or trailers with it, and in a few years, my daughter will be driving it. So reliability and efficiency is at the top of my list. Looks like the 1403 will get the job. THanks for all of your help. Does Edelbrock not make a TV cable kit for their own products?

You can always call edelbrock and ask which carb would be best and also about the brackets. Just a quick look in their catalog shows either an #8031 or #8032 could work, but these are universal type brackets for a TH350/400 or a 700R4.

I know the BTO kit is expensive, but it is not as expensive as burning up your trans due to the cable being improperly set....

I loved my 1406 on my 305, however i had trouble hooking up the tv cable for my 700r4 and had to rebuild my quadrajet.

Ya I have their kit on my 1406 and no issues at all. I have tuned the carb twice in 8 yrs and have never touched the TV cable since installing it. The smaller carb would probably be better for a 305....

If u want something that will give u good fuel economy and great throttle response. i would go with a demon, i would go with a road demon. they will last longer and get all around performance. i run one on my 350 and it make 350 hp or so and it passes emission. and i get 16 mpg with 33 and 3.73. i ran a edlebrock befor and my truck ran like crap. after i change it, i got more power and better fuel economy so i would go with a demon.

Re: Which Edelbrock 1403 or 1406

Bluex, what did you have to do to get the TV cable to work? That seems to be an area of concern. Did you use a kit of some kind or modify and use your old Q-jet one? Buy the way, this truck use to run all over Greenville, SC when my cousin owned it.

seems like everytime I change an engine over from an edelbrock to a holley they run smoother and stronger. funny an afb was made in the early days of sbc and the holley as an IMPROVEMENT

size of carb should not matter given the same a/f ratio and driving conditions, a 950 carb will spit out the same amount of fuel as a 3 barrel just one will flow more air and hence more fuel, and if your engine gets worse mileage with a bigger carb, well its because your engine like the bigger carb

if you want mileage get a two barrel and enjoy, but also climb a mountain with a wet rag in your mouth and tell me if its fun

stock 305 carb flows 780cfm via quadra bog

My vote is for a 1403. it'll give better throttle response and fuel economy.

Re: Which Edelbrock 1403 or 1406

A 1406 will work fine after changing the jetting, but the 1403 would be a better choice as long as you don't plan on upgrading to a bigger engine in the future. I'm running a 1406 on my crate 305 and it works great, but I had to really jet it way down first. If I were buying new and not planning a bigger engine in the future, I'd get the 1403. As it is, I'm planning on a 350 swap so the 1406 is a better choice for me, personally.

Re: Which Edelbrock 1403 or 1406

I put a 1406 on a stock (1987) 305. In my 72 LWB with TH350, 3.07 axle and 31" tires I can get 18 mpg highway only if I stay 60-65 mph. In town and/or higher speeds it drops rather quickly.

Re: Which Edelbrock 1403 or 1406

get one with out the electric choke and with a mechanical secondary

i have the the edelbrock 1406 and it spits and sputters all the time i can never cruise very easily without it jumping all over the place it acts like its lost and ive had a guy at a gm dealership one of my good friends tune it because he knows how to tune very good and still does it not as much as before but it still does it and some times it back fires too escpessially since its getting cold now

id go with a holley plain and simple best carbs ive heard of yet im just gonna see if i can ride this edelbrock through cause i just bought it about 3 months ago and want to make it last

so if i was you id go with holley they are great carbs

i would just stay away from edelbrock altogether. they just a big pile of crap. holley has been around for almost 100 years and they are the best, demon is just the same thing just different metal. if u are going to spend money, spend it right the frist time. buy a holley or demon.

This has been the exact opposite of my experience. I find Edelbrock carbs to be very easy to tune and to stay there once you set them. I generally find Holleys to be finicky and prone to needing retuned. I've got the 1406 on both of my Chevys, my Dad's Chevelle, my brother's Chevelle, and my brother-in-law's Ford. They all work quite well and give no problems.

Rarely do I hear anyone recommend a Holley over an Edelbrock for a street car (for a race car, yes, but not for a driver). And I don't know if I've EVER heard anyone recommend a Demon. I have, however, heard horror stories of raw metal shavings inside and poor fitment of parts. I have no personal experience with them though.

If I bought a car and it had a Holley on it, I'd remove it and put on an Edelbrock. It would be worth it purely in the time saved in tuning. My $0.02.

Every person to their own choice. I have had many Holley carbs that have given problems, and some that have not. I have been running Carter and
Edelbrock carbs (take note the two AFB carbs are the EXACT same body---all made by Magnetti-Marelli Corp---parts are interchangeable) a few years, now and when you set the jets and needles right, they work quite well and last a long time.
